How do I get better fuel economy?

What is the best way to give my 84 chevy c10 pickup better fuel efficiency? I'll take any advice. It has a chevy small block 350 with holley carb.

Re: How do I get better fuel economy?

well this is the pre 1947 forum, but good mpgs are not a year specific thing.

the best way is to slow down. air resistance is exponential to speed, meaning the faster you go, the more air you have to push. your truck has all the air cheating curves of a cinder block, so your best bet is to just drive slower, speeds over about 55mph should be avoided. also, drive like there is an egg under the gas pedal. in the grand scheme of things, your arrival times in short trips will be longer, but inconsequentially

run your tires at their max pressure, to minimize rolling resistance. make sure your tires are in good shape.

if the little plastic air dam under your front bumper is missing, reinstall it, and you can even use some garden edging instead to make it slightly larger (closer to the ground). I talked to the aerodynamics guys a lot when I worked at an aircraft manufacturer and I drove a suburban and this was their advice, make the air go around instead of under as much as you can.

Octanne booster is no help.
Tune your carb, etc.
MPG will never be good. You're/we're driving a brick.

if your engine doesnt knock on regular unleaded, you dont need premium or any octane booster.

besides, even if octane booster helped get better mpg, you would have to add the cost to your full tank cost and I bet money, if it gave extra mpg it would cost more than just the mpg on reg gas.

try posting in the correct forums, this is not the hotspot of activity for 1984 truck questions.

for fuel and engine questions try the engine and drivetrain forums
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/f...splay.php?f=24

and here is the correct forum for 1984 trucks
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/forumdisplay.php?f=4

above all, try searching for your answers before posting using the search button on each forum or the google search box at the top of the page (select the 67-72chevytrucks option to confine your search to this site). this community is great and helpful but even the nicest guys get tired of answering the same questions.
