Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

I think yall might not realize that my truck was pretty much done....hacking the back of the cab off would have been an option 5 years ago...much less so today.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

I agree, I wouldn't get into any body work, but sounds like floorboard/foot well lengthening is your only option. Can't move seat back, so feet have to go forward. You sound willing and able to do the fabrication, so get to work. Haha. Times like this, I'm glad I'm short lol

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

You might want to look at the under the floor style master cylinder mount or low mount style they use on street rods and race cars. Heck maybe there is a way to mount the gas pedal upside down and putting it in its own enclosure so you retain the proper pedal throw.

You know its crazy you said this. I was at a cruise in with some older guys and we were talking about Porsches' obsession with floor mounted gas/brake/clutch pedals. Made me wonder if I "frenched" the pedal into the floor if I could get a go-kart type pedal position.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

This hasn't gone away yet, I've just been super busy helping with other projects and school for Tig.

The current thoughts are now twofold; Since tubbing the firewall will have to happen, I want to keep it a small as possible to keep room for headers etc. I'm already thinking that since I need to exhaust setup to take advantage of my new heads, I'll have to just build or modify a custom set. I'll need to do the footwell project before completeing that as well, so its holding up lots of future projects.
Part of the other idea is "down not out". Basically cutting some of the "floormat" area of the floor in front of the cab support, and channeling the footwell in there as well. This will have similar effect to raising the seat, and gains us another 1-3" without going further out. The hope is that the combination of the two changes will allow us to mount a new pedal setup in a comfy place for me.

Frankly, I've come so far on the truck that I should really just take a step back, pat myself on the back and move it along...but I really don't think I can do that.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

We never can or will.

So for pedals you could use this for your brakes: http://www.jegs.com/i/Wilwood/950/34...rentProductId= and you can either low mount your existing master cylinder or to reduce your profile while still retaining the hydro boost go like this:http://www.jegs.com/i/Wilwood/950/26...rentProductId= that way you keep the fluid away from the exhaust heat.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

This hole thread is exactly why I have done nothing to the nice original 64 I bought a month or so ago. I sit in the truck and feel like im a sardine in a can!!! Im thinking of cutting the colum to make it four inches shorter. It has the stock seat but I can see even if I took the back off the seat still feel i need a few more inches. They must have designed these trucks for Midgets....

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

bomber style seats.

or do the 'blow-through' minitruck style you posted earlier.

cut off the roof, remove the back of the cab and have all the room you need.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

Im 6'5" and use a pair of buckets from a Chevy Lumina which adjust front to back, recline, and up and down for height (all manually), the gas tank is out back which as stated earlier gains very little, I use a tilt/tele column from a Coupe De'Ville. I also did the lowering trick with the doorstop bumper to my clutch pedal. While its still not super spacious in my cab, it is decent and long drives are no problem.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

I'm 6'5" so I get what you are saying here, however there is one thing that comes to mind.
What do the late 40's early 50's guys do? I mean our trucks can get tight, but my dad's '49 is a FAR tighter fit than my '66.
It just came to mind to see what they do about it, because I'm sure many of those guys do something so that they can fit in there.

6'4" and all day long....
2005 silverado regular cab

If I remember correctly I think your seats were kinda low to the floor right? (judging by your ammo run video I thought I saw you guys sitting pretty low). Get some height maybe and give it a twirl....

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

ya we raised the seats 3" more after the first page or so of this thread. Its better, but still not what I want out of my favorite car.

Dan, I like that remote cylinder. Its a really interesting Idea and I might have to try it out. I just have the crappy plastic res on the master now anyway.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

Well for us tall people it also depends on our build too, I know guys my height whose legs are actually longer than mine so that poses its own set of issues that makes it hard for us to use what works for everyone else. But I need a wide comfortable seat as well and no I'm not a fat ass lol just a larger framed man who is 6'4" tall barefoot. Hell ever shoe size might play into our pedal issues too.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

Tell me about it, I wear size 14's. I happen to also collect sneakers, and about 60% of my shoes in that size are too larg to manipulate the pedals in any performance driving situation.

I sometimes keep a super low profile pair of Nike free run shoes, the thin ones with pretty much no sole. They do the job well enough and spare me the extra inch of sole, plus they save my expensive sneakers from getting creased.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

Maybe you should look into driving shoes like for drag racing they might be low profile enough to use for your big 14's, then just keep them in the truck. If they work, it will still be a pita to keep changing shoes though.

You could always throw it on a 2012 Ram Frame?

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

interesting truck, but like many body swaps; you can really tell is OVER the frame lol. I hate seeing huge amounts of frame because I feel like it just looks like the body doesn't fit.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

Are our frames open sided? I would rather box my stock frame and add extra cross bracing than to put anything non GM on or under it.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

Ya they are, but boxing them is very simple because of that. A break and a sheet of 1/8" is all you need (welder too, duh).

If I were to build a tow rig out of an older truck like this, thats how I'd go, since you can retrofit enough HD suspension and drivetrain peices to "make" a 2500hd yourself.

Re: Going to lengths for legroom.

Have you considered converting to a set of pedals that are adjustable? I don't think it would be as hard to change out as the body mods previously mentioned. Certainly more involved than raising the seat. My 05 Titan pedals adjust about 4 inches.
