67-72 suburban crew cab conversion

I was just wanting to see if anyone could lead me in the direction of some pictures or any tips on converting a 71 burb into a crew cab while using the back half of a pick up cab. Any info would be great i want it to look original but, I am not horribly concerned about perfection due to the possible body damage it may see.

Thanx

Re: 67-72 suburban crew cab conversion

Thanks for those pics the trucks in those pics are amazing. The only thing i didn't really see in the pics is where the cuts were made to mount the back of the pick up cab to the suburban cab. The other thing i was curious about is if there was anything used to reinforce the seam of the two joints from cab to cab or is that even necessary.

thanx

The suburban roof is different than the truck roof, it sit about an inch higher (you probably already know that). So yo graft into the burb roof or reskin it to look like the truck roof. I would re-inforce it with one the braces that is on the inside of the burb.

Those pics are great, never really considered changing the whole roof but i did figure it as a problem with the tops not being the same. Now i think im ready to start cutting on it, and get it done.

Re: 67-72 suburban crew cab conversion

thats a neat idea.....just hope you do the crew cab conversion with a pickup body or at least a suburban that is beyond restoring (back end rotted out). i'd hate to see someone hack up a good suburban. my 72 will be getting stainless flip out towing mirrors (in place of the dinky sport mirrors) and yankee chrome teardrop roof lamps from my dad's late 72 suburban. thats it for body mods for my baby.

Re: 67-72 suburban crew cab conversion

hey Hart Rod.....a couple suggestions:

1) suburban front doors (straight, not curved) to maintain the lines with the rain gutter.....it looks a little strange to me with the double curved doors.

2) if you did just a right 2nd row door like on a burb, it would really be different, but the 4 doors is definitely more practical!

***probably better for most people to use 2 pickup roofs and save the rarer and more valuable suburban bodies for other things if possible. this is a neat category and i look forward to seeing finished products!

Re: 67-72 suburban crew cab conversion

Me and my Dad built one about 10 years ago and left the third door a fake but put a handle on it and everything. the result is endless laughs with people trying to open the "fake out" door!

but these custom trucks are way worth the time money and effort to build especially when hauling the family to the lake!

Re: 67-72 suburban crew cab conversion

also the squared off front doors are alot more attractive than the curved doors (opinion) if you havnt already decided on curved
