Bed Bolt Question? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I talked to the guy I bought the truck from last night and he told me that the bed is nto bolted on and I will need to figure a way to secure for transportation. He dioes not know where the bolts are at so i was wondering what all I need to get it bolted back down for the haul home..

I have about a 120mile trip to get it home and I like to run 75 mph so i don't need this thing going anywhere..

He took it apart in anticipation of a restore...That never happened and now I bought it..

I need to know everything.. Bolts nuts washers anything that it needs to hold it down...

If the bed is assembled, all you need are some 3/8 carriage bolts. Any 3/8bolts will do to make trip home.They should go through cross sills and frame.If you get two in the rear cross sill and two up front that should hold it down.

Ummm, I do not see that going 75 mph for a while, unless it is on a trailer? if it is on a trailer , I would just strap it down to the frame. You could bolt it also.

Well it does run and is driveable... Small Block Chevy in it with a turbo 350.. But I will go back to the original question..

It will be towed home and I do towe at 75mph... I have straps but would rather just bolt it down... 4 bolts should hold it down with no problems just need to know what size to get...

and yes those air shocks will be one of the first things to go!

3/8 carriage bolts will do the trick.

Understand there are wooden mounting blocks that usually go under the bed's crossmember. Off the top of my head I'd say a 6" carriage bolt with some large fender washers should be more than sufficient. Personally I'd strap the bed down as you have no idea if there are any crossmembers and what state the nuts and bolts are in holding those parts together.

Great idea.. I will just use these 2 big straps and then work on mounting it this weekend when it is at home...

Looks like a great project, and I was not sweating you on it running, it just takes a few years around here to sink into dirt like that, after sittting idle for years they tend to run pretty rough. Good luck and Congrats!!

no problem man... The current owner already draind the tank and flushed the lines and it is back up and running now... I am going to tune it up, new fuel filter, oil, filter and service the tranny as soon as it gets home though...
