Thanks Rob! Do you foresee any problems with this? Because I really can't think of any but what do I know.

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD

I had to put a 2 or 4* shim(cant remember) on the rear axle to lower the pinion angle but other than that it has about 7K miles with no issues. My son drives it everyday.

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD

You will need to find the short tail shaft housing from a 2wd 4l60e like out of a car with without a slip yoke.
The one I got was for a 6l80 out of a camero. They are not slip yoke tail shafts.
Because I had a 2 price driveline I was able to make a slip yoke style work because the front drive line doesn't slip. Hope this makes sense.
If you have a 1 price driveline or need the driveline to move in and out of the trans this will not work. The 4x4 tail shaft in the trans has a spline of only about 3-3/4"
On my truck the trans connection is a slip style but the driveline is stationary to the center carrier bearing.
Again not sure this makes sense without pictures and details

No, This will not work on a 4L60E, The Output shaft has to be swapped.

Is the tailshaft on a 4L60E 4x4 different then the car 4L60e with the triangle yoke and black rubber joint? Other than the center bolt?

The 4x4 Output shaft is quite a bit shorter than a 2wd Output shaft.

Another issue is the VSS Reluctor wheel is on the Output shaft on 2wd 4L60E.

IIRC, The GTO was the only car to use a Rubber joint & a 4L60E, They used a standard 2wd 4L60E & a Slip Yoke.

Got you! I forgot about the VSS on the tail shaft portion.
Thanks

This is a pretty cool idea for the guys with a two-piece driveshaft. Lots of 4x4 trannies where I am.

Re: 6L80 4WD to 2WD

Great idea First C10. I'm curious for the 2-piece drivelines, why not just run the 4WD transmission as is w/o the transfer case? Since the driveshaft does not need to slip, is it necessary to change the tail housing, pull the freeze plugs, etc. There is really nothing I can think of that needs lubrication. I would think you could just grease the splines of the output shaft.

raic65,
I understand what you have asked. It sounds like it would be ok. But remember the coupler to the TC is supported by the TC. The tail shaft housing has a bushing that keeps the slip yoke centered and provides support.
I wanted to keep the trans somewhat stock looking as the 4wd mount is large and would look like I just made anything work to get it running. (to me at least), it also woulds have a place for debris to be trapped. Another thing , If you look in post #24 you can see the center hump drops down towards the driveline. If you were to use the 4wd transmission mount (see post #2) you would probably have to clearance more of the tunnel.
In post #2 the yoke is actually to long so I bought a shorter one. Even though the slip yoke doesn't slip because the center support bearing is rigid the transmission is basically a stock car transmission without the bolt on yoke.
Hope this makes sense.
Scott

I am going to keep the short output shaft that is in the 4WD trans and install a camaro houseing extention(see picture).
I may have to get a larger tailshaft bushing and seal. I am using a 4L80 slip yoke. I will post pictures of the motor/trans.

Oh and this is for my son he is 15 1/2 and will get his permit this next week. I have been guiding him on the project as he is doing the work. Best thing ever for a young man to learn a skill and take pride in what he has. Iinstead of the damn video games!!!

I know I'm coming in a little late on this thread, but in wondering how long that tailshaft extension is? I ordered one today and plan on giving this a try. I really don't want to year a 32,000 mile transmission apart if there is no need in it. Thanks for all the info on the swap

As you can see in the picture in post 4 (I think). the tail shaft barely sticks out of the new housing. I think the spline is 3 1/4" so hopefully this is what you needed.

I have a couple of questions on your swap 1. What did you end up using for the bushing and seal in the camaro housing, and 2. Would you happen to have the part numbers for the bushing and seal? One of the posters in the thread asked if this would work on a 4l80e but there was no response to that question. Clinebarger stated it wouldn't work on the 4l60e but I would like to try using it on a 4l80e.

Thanks,
LockDoc

This only applies to the 6L80/90 transmissions. I am not sure if this will fit the 4L transmissions.

The tailshaft housing I used came with the housing, bushing, seal and was even lubed up. I just added the o'ring where the housing attached to the transmission.
