Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
Am replacing a bent front stabilizer shaft frame bracket.
The official manual says the rivets are 3/8" x 1". They are pretty large compared to some other rivets. Had read the correct way to put in a rivet by hand is by peening the rivet with a ball peen hammer. One author suggested heating the rivet to red hot before peening. Another did not. Having just started with a large hammer and cold chisel then switched to a grinder to get the old rivet heads off, using a hand held ball peen hammer to peen the rivet doesn't seem like it will get the job done. A frame shop suggested drilling a slightly wider hole in both the bracket and frame and using grade 8 bolts instead of the rivets. Seems to me that GM may have designed with rivets and the holes of specific diameters for a reason. How have you folks handled this situation? Last edited by Wincks2; 03-11-2010 at 03:31 PM. |

Sounds like a lot of trouble to me. I'd just bolt it on and forget it. No aftermarket stuff is riveted on, always bolted on with no issues I'm aware of...

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
knock the rivet out and use a grade 8 with nylock nut... I did that to most of my frame...
cut and "X" on the head with a cutoff wheel, and use an air chisel to knock the head off and puch it out...

If I bolt it on, any idea to how many ft. lbs. I tighten it? As it is replacing a rivet, I'm guessing it would be a lot.

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
your thinking too much about this ... just tighten it down till you can't move it anymore ... it's a Grade 8 bolt, you're not going to break it with STANDARD hand tools.

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
Just use a grade 8 bolt, 3/8 size.
Industry standard is 44 ft/lbs torque with a plain steel bolt and 33 ft/lb with a plated one. Just tug it hard with a long 3/8 drive ratchet and 9/16 socket. The FAA taught me years ago that a properly torqued equivalent sized bolt is just as good as a rivet in usage. If it's good enough for planes it's good enough for old trucks.

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
OK, thanks. Will just tighten it down as well as possible.
What about the width of the hole and bolt considering the threads? Should I drill the holes larger so they will take a bolt on which the amount of solid metal going through the holes is closer to the diameter of the original holes and solid metal rivet? Or would a bolt fitting the existing holes suffice even though the diameter of solid metal would be less due to the threads? Do you folks always drill a bigger hole rather than use the original hole diameter? |

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
tractor supply has grade 8 hardware for $4 a pound... It doesn't need over tightened, i've broken one with a long handled ratchet...

without a torque spec "over-tightened" is open for debate ... thus my reply about STANDARD hand tools.

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
OK, thanks.
Hand tools are what I have for the most part. Because I had read that ft lbs were relevant for some applications I bought one of those bars that accepts a socket on one end and has an arrow that moves to show how many ft lbs are being applied. Thanks again for all of the guidance! |

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
torque wrench... my service manual has specs, it's based off the 3/8's bolt, not the location of the bolt. I'll check if you want to be sure, not that big of a deal to me...

Does the military use AC-43.13 for reference material for your repairs ?

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
Agree on the bolt - that was the "in plant" repair for an improperly installed rivet.
In fact, I tried to get them to use all bolts instead of rivets for the spring hangers on my truck when I had it built - but they wouldn't do it... K

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
According to my Pocket Ref by Thomas J Glover (book you see in every hardware store) 3/8 Grade 8 dry torque is 43.6 ft-lbs. for 7/16 it is 69.8 lbs.

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
I'd say that's pretty close to the 44 ft/lb I typed in post number 6.

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
Thanks everyone for suggesting, looking up, and offering to look up torque specifications. In the GM shop manual doesn't seem to specify torque for this particular job. Maybe because they were rivets originally. I will tighten to 44 ft lbs. When I take it for the provincial safety inspection they will probably test it and if they want it different will do it. If they do I will report back.

Re: Peening a 3/8" x 1" rivet?
I worked for Caterpillar for 30 years and Cat uses Grade 8 on everything. Use a grade 8 nut with your grade 8 bolt and your joint should be stronger than a rivet which is made from softer material in order to be peened. Stop by your Cat dealer and pick up a copy of "One Safe Source". This has a fastener catelog for Grade 8 nuts and bolts and much more. A good reference book and free.
