93 s10 v8 swap

As the title says my new project will be putting a 350 small block into my brothers 93 2wd s10. I usually fiddle with the 67-72's and the 73-87's so this is new to me. I found a kit that comes with the appropriate motor mounts, headers and radiator for the swap. My main concerns are since it has air will i need to modify the air box to get tall valve covers to fit, will the serpentine setup from the 4.3 work on the 350, which water pump(long or short), andwill all my guages and idiot lights still work since i will be eliminating the tbi. I know i can get the guages to work but i haven't look the truck over that much and was wondering how much of the wiring harness that will need to be modified. The last thing i am unsure of is what transmission is in this darn thing. I'm guessing a 4l60e but i don't know. I know its not a 700r4 for sure. Also will i have to move the transmission backwards at all? I'm sure you guys can answer most of these questions and appreciate all your input.

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

Yes the serpentine set up will work, Use the water pump from the 4.3. Not sure about the tall vave covers hitting the air box. The only concern, I see you might run into is the fan being real close to the rad. you might need to put a flex fan, or just install electric fans.
For lights and guages, be sure to keep that section of wiring harness and take out all the sending units from the 4.3 these can be put back into the 350 so your guages will still work.

PS I'd like to see some pics of those projects you have listed in your sig. Makes me what to do something with an old isuzu diesel motor I have.

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

It should be an early 4l60e, basicly an electronic 700r4. Its NOT, going to last behind your v8 at all... and I'm thinking you need a controler for it too but not sure. My old 93 s10 had the electric trans so thinkin you would too. So before I went and got a stand alone controler for it, I'd just get a older 700r4 thats built to handle the v8. AS for the front accessories, all the stuff will work off the 4.3 even the water pump. You need to buy the s10 v8 conversion book from the company called "jags that run" or "JTR". It tells you hot to clearance your ac box and exactly where to clearance your floor etc. GOOD book and worth the money. http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Che..._S-10_V-8.html

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

I need to order that book myself.
Your trans is most likely a 4l60e 4-speeds, Longitudinally positioned, 6000 lbs. GVW, Electronically controlled. It's basically a 700r4 with the electronic stuff added. There are not very strong in stock form. So I tend to agree with ^ about getting a 91 or 92 700r having it built.

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

Thanks for the information guys.

BarryB i need to change all that stuff in my signature, that was a joke between a friend and i trying to get back at one of the moderators in one of the other sections. Dieselwrencher on here has alot of good ideas though on conversions and things. I'm curious as to what you are wanting to do with the isuzu motor. Pm me some of the details.

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

I wouldn't ditch the 4L60E for a 700R-4. IMPO the 4L60E is a better trans than the 700R4.

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

i didnt get that book to do the swap. I did join the s10v8.com forums for a little help, move the radiator out further, that kit you mentioned would be ok, but I got stuff seperate. got my rad for $110 I think it was, mounts for like 80 and headers for 150 i think i did a 99 from a 2.2/4l60e to v8 with 700r4the 99 radiator support isnt as nice to work with as the 1st gen s10s for making room for a radiator. I ditched my factory gauges but kept a lot of my harness, just got someone with AllData (or you can get a DIY All data access to find out what pins going into the ECM do what so you can locate switched 12v sources and such and all you stuff for your A/C

Chevy2rcer- The kit that i dound is from the s10v8 forums. From what i've read about it all should be drop and play with the radiator. We'll see i guess lol. I've been through melbourne, but have have never stopped.

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

I've done a few swaps in first gens. I can tell you right now you can keep your trans in the factory location but you'll have to move your radiator into the support if you want to run a mechanical fan with the serpantine setup. Also with the 700r4 you can keep the oem shift linkage setup but you'll have to tweak the rod some and move the engine about 3/4" farther forward. I'm running a 305 with 700r4 in my 88 S10 Blazer with the stock crossmember and driveshaft, and shift on the column. V-belt setup with LWP and 3 core rad in the stock location. My water pump pulley bolts are about 1/2" away from the rad. I have dual 12" fans pushing air from the front. Logged over 50,000 miles since I put it together. The 4l60e needs a trans controller to operate, 700r4 doesn't. I have the Hedman shorties on mine and they fit great. Also I always tell everybody go with the 153 tooth flywheel and matching starter (mid 80's Camaro), it gets it in closer to the block and away from header heat. You might also trim the ears off the trans bellhousing while it's easy to access. It doesn't hurt anything and gives you a little extra clearance for linkages and exhaust.

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

I will be eliminating the column shift linkage in favor a B&M cable operated floor shifter. As for the fan what if i used a direct bolt flex fan instead of the factory fan with a clutch? I measure one i had in the garage and its about an inch shorter front to back. Also does anyone know if you can use the 4.3 Starter?

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

I found a set of electric fans on ebay last night i thin I'm just gonna get for the truck to help eliminate clearance issues. They were like $70 for dual 14" fans and all the wiring, relays, and mounting hardware.

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

it is still tense with the rad in a stock location. I made a new tranny xmember and left the engine in the raise position on the transdapt mounts, i think i'd I'd gone to the lower I woulda had more issues, think the headers woulda hit unless I moved it back, if i moved it back there would be distributer issues... that kit you are talkin about might have the radiator relocation brackets as part of it... I'd still get stuff seperate, thats a vette radiator in that kit, stock, transdapt engine mounts, headmen headers...

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

Well all of the parts for the swap kit arrived on Thursday, all of which look very nice. We disassembled the front end tonight. I was looking through the conversion book that comes with kit and they recomend you do alot of different things many of which involve a hammer lol. Souns like most of it will be setting the engine in there and mocking everything up before getting carried away with the torch and hammer.

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

The only thing you can't use on a 350 from the 4.3 (besides the obvious - manifolds and such) are the connecting rods.

Starter will work just find.

How tall are your valve covers? The 350 won't sit any higher than the 4.3 did, and you can get probably 3/4" taller overs on over stock with the airbox as-is (but you won't be able to remove them in the truck).

I don't think all of the 93's had 4l60E, some still had the regular 4l60. The biggest question is do you have a kickdown cable on the TB? If you do, you can run the 4l60 without a computer - the only electronics are for the torque converter automatic lockup feature, which can be done with a simple switch and relay setup.

You can use a 350 starter on a 4.3 but you cant use a factory gear reduction 4.3 starter on a 350. They have WAY less torque and will not spin the motor over fast enough. If it has a big old style starter they will swap tho. But his s10 originaly had a little gear reduction deal on it.

You'll want to roll the 1/2" lip on the trans tunnel in. Other than that you can clearance the floor a little on each side where the collectors will be, some bump the floor others don't. Depending on the motor mounts and how low you want the motor to sit, you can notch the crossmember under the starter. My wife's is notched, mine is not.

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

the JTR book is a really good resource but you wont need the hammer near as much as they say ya do, neither of mine have the cross member Clarenced and both have the 4.3 starter's with no problems at all.
good luck with the build , there a lot of fun to drive when finish'd .

Re: 93 s10 v8 swap

I did have have a 4l60E in the truck, but luckily i found a 700r4 out of a 92 this past sunday for $100. I am going to roll that lip under this week on the transmission tunnel and it sounds as if we may be settting the motor and tranny in this weekend for a mockup. I will try to get some pics up soon as my brother has wire brushed the front half of the frame and POR 15 it and it looks really sharp. Hope to be ordering all the front suspension parts this next week and get that put back together.
