Raffle Winner

-
I have never really won anything in my life, maybe a few door prizes at the local cruise nights.... anyway, I bought a few raffle tickets at a local benefit for a young man that has a brain tumor, and won first choice of the prizes. I picked the Henry Golden Boy Silver, 22 cal., Octagon Barrel Rifle. Filled out the paperwork last week and picked it up the other day. Looks really nice. Now all I have to do is figure out if I want to shoot it or just leave it in the box.....

Re: Raffle Winner

That looks like a super nice rifle....a great little .22.
What would be the reason for leaving it in a box rather than shooting and using it?

If that was an original, early series Henry rifle....i could see using it sparingly...but not a new one.

....absolutely great rifle tho' nicely done.

Re: Raffle Winner

You're old and can't handle much more than a 22. Go have some fun with it.

Why can't you and Pat just shoot it in your yard?

My girlfriend has the Evil Roy in .22 and the 30-30 brass receiver. Both very smooth actions and great shooting guns. Shoot it it's going to be fun.

I have the same (similar) gun. It is an NRA anniversary special one and I am having a hard time wanting to take it out to the range and shoot it. It is just a really nice looking gun.

The Marlin Golden 39-A .22 Lever Action rifle I bought in 1968 is still in the box. I'm just that way sometimes. I just gave it to my son a while back.

I still shoot the 45-70 with no problem, so there... I probably could shoot it in the yard but you forget that there is a bicycle/walking path across the road from me....

My brother has a golden boy 45-70. And a Marlin in 44Mag. He says if he dies I get all his guns, ammo and reloading stuff. His collection makes mine look like a rookie

Re: Raffle Winner

Henry rifles are indeed nice guns.. my kids have what appears to be hand selected stocks but I haven't seen an ugly one yet!

if you didn't know, you can replace the receiver cover with one directly from the factory and have it engraved or personalized if you want to..

Personalized Henry Golden Boy Silver Cover

they make nice keepsakes because they are so nicely finished but also great functioning so tough not to shoot them..

I wouldn't not shoot it unless it was an extremely rare or unusual model and you were planning to keep it for investment..

I have a couple of antique guns new in box that are worth at least double what high condition fired models are worth but storing them and preserving their condition is a burden..

as a cool raffle prize from a great cause, shooting it reminds you of the meaning behind your acquisition of it..

all Marlin 39A models I have and ever seen break down.. the giveaway for other sub models would be the large knurled takedown screw on the right side..

interesting story behind the JC Higgins labeling J. C. Higgins

Quote:
The brand name, J. C. Higgins, was based on a real person, John Higgins who was a Sears employee. He moved from his birth country of Ireland to the United States in his late teens and began working for Sears in 1898. He spent his entire working career with Sears and was Vice President for the company for a period of time. He was actually born with no middle name but the Sears Co. presented the idea of labeling their sporting good line with his name and saw it more presentable labeling the brand as J.C. Higgins. He worked with the company until his retirement as head bookkeeper in 1930. Higgins died in 1950. His expertise in sporting goods or sports is unknown.
if you're interested in finding out the gun manufacturer of a store brand model, this list is fairly comprehensive..

if you don't find yours, send me the model number, I probably have info on it somewheres around here..

STORE BRAND CROSS-OVER LIST

good luck!
