235 75r15 tires on 8in wheel?

So I got a deal on 4 smoothies for my 53 but they are 8in wide and my tires on the truck right now are still brand new and 235 75 15s. I have a friend running the same setup and the tire looks almost too perfect of that makes sense. I'm curious if it impacts handling much. I got 30 days to decide if I want to keep em but wanted to get some feedback from you guys. Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by "too perfect" or what you are asking about handling.

I can say, however, that a 235/75R15 fits on an 8" wide wheel real nice.

Re: 235 75r15 tires on 8in wheel?

Andrew, I don't know if you know this but apologies in advance if you do - maybe others don't understand tire sizes.

Your 235/75 is the tire width in millimeters(235) and the "aspect ratio"(75) is the height of the sidewall expressed as a percentage of the tread width. So your tires are 235mm and divided by 25.2 = they are roughly 9.32 inches wide at the tread.

Since the rim width is 8" your tires will fit perfect with half the difference in width as "tuck-in" or each side of the rim....about 5/8"

Hope this helped. - Dan

Re: 235 75r15 tires on 8in wheel?

Hey guys, sorry about the confusion. It sounded like online that a 7in wheel is "perfect" and an 8in wheel with these tires is the absolute max and stretches out the sidewall where the tire might lol almost bias in so far as there isn't that slight bulge at the base. Hard to explain I suppose. I was wondering how it would handle besides looks. Maybe slightly more surface area and better handling? Haha hope that helps.

Re: 235 75r15 tires on 8in wheel?

here is a site that may help with tire size comparisons if you want to get diameters and height etc. just type in your original size and the size you want to try. there is also other good info on there as well, like wheel backspacing chart, speedo error with different tire sizes etc.

https://tiresize.com/comparison/

here is a site that can help with engine rpm estimates when tire sizes are changed etc. you need to know your rear axle ratio and final drive ratio in trans. it also helps you find that info as well.

https://www.ringpinion.com/calculators/Calc_RPM.aspx

I have found that 7 in wide wheel look better & drive better with 235X 15 tires.

Re: 235 75r15 tires on 8in wheel?

something to keep in mind is that the 235 is the tire width at the SIDEWALL, which may or may not be the width of the tread. I remember years ago the big balloon tires on full size rwd sedans that were narrow little tread

thats my favorite rear tire and wheel setup, 235/75/15 on 8 inch wide wheel

did it on the 65

the 47

and the 49

I am doing skinny artilleries and bias look radials on the 41 or I would do it again.

Re: 235 75r15 tires on 8in wheel?

I'd have to look but I think my wife's old snow tires off her 79 Caprice (ex cop car) are 235-75-15 on 15x8 pickup rims. Tires are too old to drive on but I keep them around for rollers if I need them.

Joedoh, How wide are the whites on your tires? I have contemplated the 235's on my 50 but thought the 3 1/8th WW size would be too big Like the looks of yours though

Re: 235 75r15 tires on 8in wheel?

I think a seven inch rim might make the sidewalls of a 235/75/15 tire look a little bit pinched in, although I think the tire/rim size chart at Coker or one of the other antique car tire places does say that this size tire should be mounted on either a seven or eight inch rim. I can't comment on the drive, ride, or handling as I've never had that combination on any vehicle I've owned. I just think they look right on an eight inch rim.

the 235s are indeed the 3 1/8", the fronts are 215s and 2.5 on the 47 and 2.375 on the 49. painting the wheel ivory made a huge visual difference, but the difference between white wall width front and back doesnt seem to be very apparent

Re: 235 75r15 tires on 8in wheel?

If your rear suspension is dialed in enough, and you are in tune with it enough, to notice an 8" wheel vs a 7" wheel on 235's... my hat is off to you.
It'll drive just fine. 8" is as wide as you want to go with 235's but it's reasonable. I think my old Jeep came with 235's on 15x7.5 wheels and it drove fine. It also drove fine with 31x10.50 (ok, I needed to regear at that point) and 30x9.50 tires.
I'd run it.

Re: 235 75r15 tires on 8in wheel?

Hey guys wanted to report back with some pix. Doing the Dakota front suspension swap so only have the rear wheels on but I like em and they fit good. Tires are dirty but I do like some old school chrome. Thanks for all your input!

maybe it is the pics but the tires look like they will rub. do you have clearance enough for them with regard to suspension travel?
wheels look good.
