Re: Intermediate shaft
the plastic coupler tends to be the p.i.t.a .
aftermarket with steel sleeve and pined work good .

Re: Intermediate shaft
Common sense? My question had nothing to do with the collar originally. I was asking about the rod material strength, stock over the replacement and if anyone had any experience with a failure on one.

Re: Intermediate shaft
oh sounds like you got offended, sorry I didnt mean to go down that path. I think you got your answer as far as a hardened shaft and not to use plastic.
I guess I was really bored and replied to such thread that already seemed to be a dead horse. |

Re: Intermediate shaft
In all the SBC's I have torn apart in the last 35 years, I have never seen an oil pump shaft failure. I've had the plastic collar in pieces in the bottom of the oil pan, but the shaft has never failed. I've reused many of them (with new collar) without issue.

Re: Intermediate shaft
Thank's Gary! Mine was burred up a little on the outer ears, but nothing major. Without that collar on there, I do see it flexing quite a bit. Just curious if anyone has ever seen a catastrophic failure on these.

Re: Intermediate shaft
I never have, but I'm sure some have failed at some point. I spin my 355 up around 7,000 RPM's once in awhile and it still has the original pump shaft in it from 1972.
I see you're in Oak Harbor... so am I. Gary

Re: Intermediate shaft
I have seen a failed stock oil pump shaft in a big block with a HV oil pump. It supposedly happened during the winter when revving the engine while it was cold.
