Well your doing a fine job for your first go at it. Ironically I paint too... Have done everything from sand blasting and spraying freeway brigdes and industrial to fine laquer work over the years and like you, I think it gives me the confidence I can do this. I just hope mine turns out half as good as your is.

I don't have near enough tools as I found out yesterday. I thought i'd have my bed off in no time cause in theory it's a simple task in my opinion, but with out proper tools it turns into a drugout ordeal. All the bolts in the bed are seized up. I may have to get a torch to free them cause I need to get this thing apart so I can get movin on it. Any suggestions on those bolts ? They always spin from the top when you try take them off. I just don't want to butcher it and cause more work for myself. Need ideas for proper torch to go with. Shoot me a pm if you have any ideas I don't want to rob your thread.

I haven't experienced the seized bed bolts yet. On the parts truck I bought, we just cut all the bolts off with an oxy acetylene torch. Might have to do the same on this one. I plan to use new hardware any how.

You might try a map gas plumbing torch to heat them up and expand them. However if you don't have a way of holding the top of them you may have to cut them off. Either a die grinder with a cut off wheel, oxy acetylene torch, maybe you can break the nut off with an air chisel.

I had to slit the nut, and break them, when I removed my front bumper.

Sometimes you have to get innovative.

Yeah I tried the air chisel and the grinder (neighbors loved that ) but I just don't want to butcher the base of the bed panels cause i'll be reusing them and don't want to create more work for myself. thats why im thinking acetylene torch and hit it from underneath to limit the damage on the edge. Gotta shop around cause I need a welder too.

Not worried about the bedstrips so much cause i'll get a new kit for mine as well. Torches zip them off like butter from what I understand but im wondering how much damage that does.. guess i'll find out. I feel like just grinding off the top of each head then just cleaning it up and deal with it. Either way, it's coming off.


I even had visions of cutting the bed open in the middle with a metal saw zaw so I could just stand in the middle of the bed and reach everything easier Probably not such a good idea though

I should be making alot of progress in the next few weeks. Finishing up painting the odds and ends now, to put the front end back together. Have a few more parts to order for the motor. And assembly begins.

Just watch the direction of the torch. If it is touching or close to other metal, it will heat it up as well and you could blow a hole where you don't want it. If you find you need to cut a bolt and it is in a bad place, try using a larger thicker piece of steel to deflect the flame and subsequent blast of molten metal from damaging other areas. also when cutting bolts it is easiest to start at the tip and work your way down little by little being careful when you get to the bottom.....hijack off.

I took apart my donor bed with a sawzall....3/4's of the wood was gone anyway. It was not fun.

Thank you. The color is just primer for now. It will remain my top coat until the entire truck is ready for paint. Not sure on the exact color combo when I get to that point. The primer is is PPG DP 60

Lastly for today.

A very helpful tool set up. 4.5" electric angle grinder with wire wheel on it. Have burned through about $50 worth of harbor freight wire wheels on this project. However I don't know what I would have used other wise. Very useful tool.

Engine side view: New starter, motor mount, and exhaust manifold mock up. I plan on running manifolds to break the motor in and (not as much heat on the valves) until I can pony up the pennies to buy good headers and have new exhaust bent. It has 2.5" dual pipes into older flowmaster 2 chambers now, dumping in front of rear end. Its a little loud. I want to do the exhaust all at once.

No doubt about the safety glasses thing. I had a few bristles stuck through my pants and into my flesh when I came in from the garage last night.

My dad has worked in a machine shop for 35 years, and has had a few eye drillings. He tought me young to always protect my eyes.

Nice notice of the brace. The garage door springs actually work decent for a 30 year old garage door. They just don't like it when I hang things on the door, it sags down a bit. Being 6'2" I need the door all the way up, or I have to wear a helment when I'm working.

The door shuts just enough to where its above eye sight line, however its low enough I will whack my head on it.
