Re: Fixed surge issue - thanks to Geezer!!! Now HEI or keep points....

Skip White Performance on ebay is where I got mine. Complete HEI Distributor with wires was about $75, awful hard to beat that price.

Looking there now, an HEI distributor with Cap, Rotor, and Coil is right at $60 shipped.

Yup. The SKip White distributors a great buy. If they crap out, just replace whatever went bad with parts store stuff and move on. Great thing about HEI is they are inexpensive, they work REALLY well, and everybody has parts since they were on every GM built from 75-85 (minus some exceptions...ESC)before they started switching things up.

I will admit that I am somewhat of an amazon.com addict. I was short on time and needed something to get me by and had this delivered next day. A full summer later, about 2k miles. Its still runs like a champ. I believe this is the same thing skip white sells and probably pretty similar to MSD entry level off-shore sourced line.

Why is coil matching important? What if the internal resistance is different, what kind of problem could it cause?

Their stock was up 13.22% yesterday. Please keep it up!

I have a couple of the MSD street fire distributor. The thing that makes them worth buying over the Skip White is they come with the same melonized gear their regular distributors come with for roller cam compatibility. It was cheaper to buy their setup then one of the others and add the gear separately. And easier!

Their stock was up 13.22% yesterday. Please keep it up!
Coil, condensers and the overall circuit resistance form an LRC (inductance, resistance, capacitance) network that operates over the range of frequencies that correspond to the rate of coil energization. For instance, running at 600 RPM, the coil will have power cycled at a rate of 1200 cycles per minute, or 20 cycles per second (Hertz). If you get a coil that is outside the normal region of frequencies that the vehicle uses, there will be lost energy in the form of heat, due to being mismatched.

The math:

600 RPM, divide by 2, since the distributor turns once for every 2 crankshaft revolutions, gives 300.

Then multiply by 4 since 4 plugs will have been fired per crankshaft revolution. That's where the 1200 comes from.

So, from 600 to 6000 RPM, the frequency will vary from 20 Hz to 200 Hz.
