Attn: All people that access to rust free junk yards.

I'm from Minnesota and there is a company here that is called Texas rust free parts. They charge anywhere from $400-$1100 for a 73-87 chevy long box. $1100 is probably almost perfect, $400 it will have some surface rust and usually lots of bondo and dents. Clips go for around $350, Doors around $150, cabs around $600.

My question is this: how much do you southern guys pay for this exact stuff? How much do 4 door/crew cabs go for from the junk yard or from a private seller?

I've spend about $1700 (from the texas rust free place in MN) on my complete body for my truck. Plus it has dents, some rust (not nearly as bad as what us Minnesotians are used to) and some bondo, and needs paint.

I am in Alabama, and the prices you are quoting are right in line with what is charged here. Never price a 4 door cab, but I would expect to them to charge about the same due to the fact that they normally don't have titles to them.

Southern and Texas sheetmetal Prices

Theres a couple of guys in my area here charging " big dollars" for this stuff too! I know they don't sell too much because alot of it is still sitting there. They are trying to make a living doing this, bringing back truck parts, and doubling the price! I think they might have got ahold of some "ditch weed"! This stuff ain't GOLD Plated, and yeah most of it is coming from or out of other wrecking yards without titles or anything, just a bill of sale.
When they get hungry enough the prices will come down. If not theres always the Do It Yourself Method, and go get your own just like they do. Wrecking yards aren't that hard to find, just ask the locals they will tell you where they are, or look in the yellow pages when you get there.

Here in MN there probably isn't one rust free older chevy truck in any junk yard. Even the stuff I bought from the Texas place had rust on it. THere was a little underneith the passenger door, On the inside of the driver inner fender where it touches the cab, and some on one side of the box, just surface though.

All my stuff was probably from a junk yard too. I had to do the whole VIN number thing, but I did it the hard way. A lady had to come inspect it and it was a real pain.

I think it'd be cheaper to go to TX or somewhere and find an old truck out in a famers yard and ask him how much. If its anything like MN (which it probably isn't) I can buy 2wd's for $50. I got a '78 3/4 ton 2wd 350 motor, 4 speed manual 14bolt FF for $50 and it had a factory tach and I believe Gov-loc. I got another truck for $50.....'80 chevy 2wd 1/2 ton 4 speed, 350 motor, has the sort of hard to find grill with square headlights. Drove them both home. I got my '75 1/2 4x4 for $400. And I know where there is another late 70s just like my '78 except without the tach for $50. Tell me....is texas and other rustfree states anything like this?

Re: Attn: All people that access to rust free junk yards.

You can buy a nice running lwb in my area for around $2000.
As far as junkyard prices it will vary from place to place...but fenders and hoods usually go for $50-$100 each. My buddy just bought a bare rust free cab from a junkyard for $200.
We have picknpull in my area and every few months they have a 50% off sale on all their parts on the yard, thats usually when I do all my "shopping".
You can visit their website to see pricing for the texas junkyards just so you can get an idea.

I just cut up a couple 100% rust free long bed trucks...a 76 and an 85 because of California DMV issues. Too bad its very pricey to ship these to the East.

A 50 dollar square body here would have no usable parts. Expect to go at least a grand on a complete truck here. Remember we use them till they wear out, not rust away.

But you have no idea what's on them to use , I used from 1980 to 85 on my 71 c10 axles Spindles and steering it all fits believe me I've done it twice now 5 bolt conversion. Made easy the ball ball joints fit brakes you don't need the expensive conversion kits

Re: Attn: All people that access to rust free junk yards.

i've pretty much made up my mind to make a trip to AZ and work my way back this spring and pick up what ever rust free sheetmetal i can for my 76 crew cab and my 65. I've seen that company advertise up north and i thought it was pretty high. But then again its supply and demand. If you have no other way to get that stuff then it could be an only option.

Re: Attn: All people that access to rust free junk yards.

I found them on the internet the other day and thought they were kinda high myself. My 84 project has solid doors, fenders, and pretty solid cab. Bed is solid but had about a 100 dents. I gave $2200 for it, replacing the engine, the 350 is really weak. Anything you can find around Ky with very little rust you'd better grab it.

Re: Attn: All people that access to rust free junk yards.

This isn't what you want to hear, but. Your not going to find many rust free squares in Florida Salvage yards. There rusted just as bad if not worse. But in different area's than most salt belt trucks.
I don't buy any sheet metal from a Florida vehicle, the salt air is death to top surfaces.
My personal truck came from Cali. and is rust free.
There not Junk Yards, there Auto Recycling Centers now. That's what the signs are now saying. I know that's an old dig, just couldn't help myself.
OK back on my meds.

Re: Attn: All people that access to rust free junk yards.

I'd like to round up some and deliver them up north myself. I still run across $200-$400 parts trucks fairly regularly. I think it'd be fun to road trip them up north somewhere if I could get my money back on delivering. There is a salvage yard less than a mile from my house that has some good sheet metal for a good price, plus I know where a few are sitting around.

I'm in central ca and people just throw these trucks away due to all the smog laws we have. I always see a ton of these in the local junkyards. Ive seen complete crew cab trucks go from 500 -1500 . There's a early 80's cc dually down the street for 800 that he can't get rid off that I've thought about buying just to part out.

Re: Attn: All people that access to rust free junk yards.

tlman....... Truck demo derbies is a "thing" in Alberta as well. Our trucks here rust ... but not like yours in Ontario. Someone discovered the 73-87 3/4 tons are super strong, and I see at least 8-10 wrecked every year at our little local Rodeo. I agree it's too bad..... but .... it's a free country. They will probably eventually become "extinct" like the early to mid 70's full size Chevy cars / wagons. They dominated Demo derbies for years... now they are gone.

I live in the South and wish I had started a square body junk yard about 15 yrs ago when they were plentiful.

Re: Attn: All people that access to rust free junk yards.

There's an old country squarebody yard about an hour and a half from me out in the sticks-the owner has re-stocked it TWICE since the first time steel prices went crazy! It's amazing how many trucks are out on farmland and rural areas still here in the Midwest. This yard has anywhere from 800-1200 trucks and it all sits on 80 acres covering 2 big hills and valleys. Good thing about it is unless you're pretty much a local-you don't know about it since it can't be seen from the highway no matter what time of year. First time I went I scored about 16 tach clusters of all years and that was only half the yard and two days of walking at the time.

Re: Attn: All people that access to rust free junk yards.

To answer your question tho-this particular yard had a dual tank square fuel door shortbox w/o tailgate and 100% rust free-right as you come in the yard sitting upside down on a sawhorse-I asked how much and I couldn't grab my wallet fast enough when he said $400! That was 2 years ago.

Re: Attn: All people that access to rust free junk yards.

If someone could work out a way to be able to bring 1 big load at a time, I bet he could make some serious cash. People would travel a couple of hours to meet up and collect their parts. Smaller stuff you can ship, but you can't afford to truck ship anything. I found a nice chrome rear bumper for $125, they wanted $135 to ship it. There is no original rust free stuff around here. Look on Ebay and see what they are trying to get out of some of this original parts is crazy, and then you add that shipping charge.

Re: Attn: All people that access to rust free junk yards.

There's no money left in this type deal. The total cost of getting it done will drive the parts prices up to high.
Its a fun fantasy to think about, there are a few who do it and make a living doing it. But very few.

If you want a rust free truck plan your next vacation down south. To an area of nice clean vehicles.

Or buy my 86 Chevy C20. As a complete running truck or a roller.\
