Insurance Nitemare

hey

talked to my insurance today to get coverage on my 1972 c10, if i go with Collecter ins it has limitations, 3000 miles (probably be ok) only 2 drivers on policy,(wife and myself)and no using truck to get gravel or stuff from home improvement stores, (kinda an issue, its a truck)

if i want to use as a truck, can only insure as plpd, no pay if im in a wreck and its my fault, no pay if it gets stolen, i can use as a truck and anyone in my family or i choose could drive it(probably not an issue, im probably going to be only driver for the most part, my son might need it every once in awhile)

What are you guys and gals using
What insurance company
What kind of coverage

Any Help very appreciated

American Family. Insure it with "Agreed" or "Stated" value. All you have to do is have it appraised.

Re: Insurance Nitemare

Allstate. I don't cover any of my own vehicles, just state minimum to cover other motorists if I am at fault. Mathing it out, I would pay the value of my vehicles every 2 years or so for full coverage. Any one of my vehicles would be totaled if they ever got in an accident. I've had 4 or so vehicles that have been in accidents that could had been totaled, but I repaired them for between $100 and $500.

This all the way, unless you have a Leno quality collector piece that increases in value faster than your premiums.

We've been with State Farm for about the past 25 years, but when I bought our '70 a couple of years ago, they wanted nothing to do about it. They put coverage on it when I first picked it up, but told me that would be a short term thing. Once that lapsed, I went with Hagerty and am very pleased with the price quote per year. If you haven't already done so, give them a call!

LockDoc
this is the way to go with a daily driven classic.

I have a full coverage 'agreed value' policy on my '65 Bel Air station wagon with Safeco. The wagon is my daily driver. I didn't even have to get it appraised. Hit a deer in November of 2017 and they covered it.

My two 'hot rods' - '69 C10 & '61 Bel Air on on classic car policies with Hagerty, but they have the usual restrictions with mileage and intended use.

Re: Insurance Nitemare

Me three on the American Family stated value policy.
In fact I just had a chat with my agent. I had the appraisal done years ago and still only have it insured for $4500 we agreed to then. 15 years ago?

A co-worker did a build of one of these on these pages, drove it a year or two, and this past summer sold it for more than 3x what I have my insured at. Agent said I need to go it it appraised.

And I do use it as a truck.

Re: Insurance Nitemare

thanks for all the replies

just an update

talked to agent today, probably going with classic for first year, it does have some limits
3000 miles a year( shouldnt be an issue)
only me and wife on policy(dont like but can make work)
doesnt want used like a truck(its a truck, but i will take care of it)

wanted my son on policy, but he has some wrecks on his record, policy wont work this way

asked about basic ins with extras, more like full coverage
says if we go full coverage, quite a bit more expensive
and as stated, need an appraisal for stated value, wouldnt be a problem

sooo

think im going with classic
after a year, ill revisit policy

i do have a 96 sonoma anyone in the family can drive if they need a truck and i dont think ive put over 3000 miles a year on it for quite awhile

so in the end
my 1972 is all mine

lol

Re: Insurance Nitemare

Call the national corvette museum. It's a little known fact they offer great insurance. You can insure a vehicle through them under an agreed value for a specified amount and pay for the amount of mileage you plan on putting on the vehicle. Trust me, give them a call.

Re: Insurance Nitemare

Hagerty has been great to work with in my experience. They insure my K10 for an agreed-upon amount (much more than the "salvage" price), I can still use it like a truck, and the rates are extremely reasonable.

Re: Insurance Nitemare

I have my 2 Vettes and my 72 C-10 with the National Corvette Museums collector car insurance. All 3 cost me $90 a month, agreed value on each and I think 3k miles a year each.

Classic Collectors insurance. Best i could find locally. They are owned by Infinity Insurance Company.

Do the appraisal. Just makes your life easier. They send the form, you fill out the information and send pictures of everything.

Mine is insured for $85,000 and the cost is $413 annually.

I do have a daily driver, and no young drivers on the policy. There are limits, but mine isn't a daily driver.

Basically, as a specialty vehicle you get a much better rate because you are not going to be getting gravel and sitting it in the parking lot while you are shopping in the mall.

IF you use it as a regular vehicle, insure it as such. You pay more, but have no limits on usage.

Best of luck.

Hagerty. You establish the value and there are no limitations.

I use Hagerty for both my '72 Chevelle wagon & '68 C10.
