What have you used for a replacement fuel tank

Hi everyone just found this site and looks great. Just purchased a 59 and have a question. What have people used as a replacement tank if moving from the cab? Filled mine up today and it is leaking by the small vent tube at tank. Drained off a few gallons
( or litres as it is called now up here) and it is ok. Looks like previous owner has put some kind of sealer around it. I would love to remove from cab but what is done if you put fuel cell under box floor? I think I saw a kit somewhere that puts a fuel door in the box bed.
Oh yea the rear bumper is gone and in it's place is a roll pan.

What I used would ruin that nice wood bed. But I think you can used a 87 or so Cougar tank for an under bed tank that fills from the rear by the toe hitch.

I have a 57 and been told that a late 70-early 80's mustang tank would work. Suppose to be able drop it in fairly easy, so thats what I been told.

On a another note, what color of yellow is that on your truck in picture? Thinking of painting mine yellow, just curious. Thanks.

I personally hate the though of having a big gas tank sitting 3 inches from me inside the cab stinking the whole place up. I asked the guy at the local speed shop about the fuel cell when I got it he told me that the tank is more durable and lighter than an aluminum tank. Instead of cracking or ripping this fuel cell conforms to impact.

Also Between the bed, floor which is diamond plate, and the frame rails I dont know how someone in just any car could push themselves that far into the back of the truck. These trucks are fairly light the most they would do is crunch the heck outta the back of the bed and push me forward.

And last of all if someone did hit me hard enough and did break the fuel cell id already be out of the car kicking the crap out of them before it would explode =D

Cal 58 GMC gave me this link and I think I am going to use them. http://www.kustomtanks.com Shipped with a tested sender installed to my door for a hefty $455.00. It does look really nice though. I am thinking all the time that I am going to spend all the money I made off selling my other truck on just the frame! I am planning on mounting a clean plate for the pump and filter canister just like 55's though cuz that $#it is HOT!

Speaking of which, sorry to hijack, but about how much do these trucks weigh? All I've ever found was the gross weight. I estimated it a few weeks ago and came up with maybe a little over 3000 pounds? That's with a 560 lb. 350 and a TH-400.

I believe the colour is a GM paint used on vettes in 90's. I can check and see if I could find a code in paper work.

This is what I used to replace the tank from behind the seat. The truck is a 58 apache fleetside shorty on a '64 chassis. It's an aluminum tank and it has a 105 litre capacity (28 US gal.) and came with the pickup tube and sending unit. The sender wouldn't work with my gauge - wrong ohms. I just used the sender from the original tank and re-bent the float wire to reach all the way down to the bottom of this tank. Had to be careful of placement so not to have it hang up on the internal baffles. I got the tank from a guy in Kelowna that used to be the supplier for Campion Boats. He has lots of these tanks in smaller sizes as well. I went for the big-ass unit for the long range, and of course - gas wars! The price of this tank?? $100 bucks plus shipping. By the time I bought all the installation goodies, I was into it for less than 2 bills. I have upgraded that duct tape filler cap to something better but have yet to come to a final solution so I can finally put the wood back down.

If you shorten the tube on the tank and buy a small piece of rubber fuel line from a boat shop you can use a boat filler screw cap same as boat use.

Hey entourageguy, That's the direction where I was going. Almost bought a chrome boat fuel filler yesterday. Didn't like how it had to be unscrewed to open. I like your idea of a pop-up cap. I was lookin at one meant for a Triumph, but it sat up quite high from the bed. Flush mount or recessed would be best. I'll be lookin for your pics.

The cap or cover is made by Bully. You can buy them for the new pickup trucks to replace the factory gas door. It is going to be put in flush with the wood floor. You push down to pop it up and push again to lock it down.

Finally finished my fuel cell. Used the same tank as 55ChevyPu. I moved the rear crossmember back 4.5 " so the filler would clear the box cross member. I borrowed my neighbours router and recessed the cap into the bed. Also cut the bed strips to fit. Seems to have worked out alright and it frees up some room behind the seat. Truck is at the body shop for some touch-ups and am trying to talk him into closing up the old filler hole on the drivers side.
