Remove Trans or Trans & T-case?

I have a 67 GMC with a 305 V-6 engine, manual 4-speed and NP205 T-case. It keeps jumping out of 2WH and 4WH. I have already taken all the play out of the single shifter. I'm thinking of removing the T-case for further inspection (and fix all the leaks too!). Is it easier to remove the T-case alone or remove the T-case and trans as a unit? Anyone know about how heavy they are?

Re: Remove Trans or Trans & T-case?

you're talking about 150 pounds each. By removing them 1 at a time, you can un-bolt it, and then manually slide it out of engagement, and man-handle it to the ground. IF you try to take them out together, you WILL need a jack to do it.

Are you sure you have a NP205 X-fer? I'm betting you got a Rockwell T-221.

Re: Remove Trans or Trans & T-case?

I think together is the best way to do it. I use my engine lift to do it. remove the center hump trans cover drop a chain arond the trans and transefer case and use the engine lift to lower it to the ground.

Yeah, I agree, when he mentioned it leaking and not shifting correctly, I thought "T221."

But anyway, I agree with earl87gta. Take out the crossmember, or move it, and put a dolly under the truck. Use the hoist to lower it onto the dolly thru the hump. This is alot better than benching them into place (been there, done that, have the bruised hands)

Re: Remove Trans or Trans & T-case?

Its a NP205 the OEM trans and case where a 3-speed column and case. This one is toploader 4-speed and case from a 71 Chevy.

I was thinking of using a floor transmission jack to slide off and lower the both down to the floor. I don't have enough room in the garage to get the cherry picker into the cab from the side.

Re: Remove Trans or Trans & T-case?

I think I would roll the truck out side drop the trans and then push it back in. If thats the way you have to do it I would see if you can rent a trans jack it will work better then a regular floor jack.

Hey thanks for all the opinions and suggestions, don't know when I'll get round to this project but I'll report back then.

Re: Remove Trans or Trans & T-case?

Go to QUAD 4x4 and pay $15 for the down-loadable 205 overhaul manual. I just rebuilt mine and it is an excellent step-by-step manual.

Re: Remove Trans or Trans & T-case?

Thanks for the tip. Now I have to confess. I pulled the floor cover off yesterday and learned that I have a Rockwell T-221 just like 1969K10 said.

Does anyone have any tips on adjusting or checking the adjustment of the two shafts and clevis pins attached to the shifting linkage? It appears that they are not right which is preventing it from going into or staying in 2WH or 4WH.

Re: Remove Trans or Trans & T-case?

There is a rod that moves back and forth between the hi/low shifter & the 2/4 shifter. Both shifters have a Stainless steel ball with a spring underneath them. The balls & rod work together to ensure the right shift mechanism works at the correct time. My guess is that you've got a spring that has collapsed or a lot of slop in your shift lever. When I got my truck, I had a ton of slop in the shift lever, but I could get it in all the positions, it just took some effort and jiggeling.

The rod that moves back & forth goes thru bosses in the casting of the "lid". So it will come off when you take the lid off the case. The SS balls usually don't want to go anywhere, but keep an eye out for them. There is no adjustment to them internally or externally.

There's not much on rebuilding these old X-fer cases. Try this link:

Re: Remove Trans or Trans & T-case?

Resurecting this from the dead....I have the same issue, and looking for ideas or adjustments. This is the only thread that comes up searching. Mine is a 67 3/4 ton with the Rockwell T-221. Shifts smooth from 4-lo to N-and N to 4hi-wants to go into 2wd, but won't stay, and shifter wants to almost hit the hump to engage in 2wd, but it jumps back to 4. Tcase was professionally rebuilt less than 200 miles ago.
Any ideas?
Thanks
