Our '68 K20

My dad and I have been in the long, slow process of restoring this truck for about 5 years now. We bought it in pieces. It has a little over 16,000 miles as it was a utility truck for a fire dept. We were skeptical about the mileage but being a fire truck and when you look at the amount that is wore on the pedals it appears that the mileage is correct.

When we bought it the frame had already been sandblasted and painted. The previous owner got rid of the utility tool box bed and had already purchased another bed.

We had the paint done by an older, retired guy who now restores cars. It's not a top dollar paint job. The paint has no clear on it. My dad wanted everything to be original so he researched the paint. Everything is original for the truck except the wheels.

My dad and I only replaced gaskets on the original 307 Chevy and we had someone else rebuild the carb. We spent a majority of the time with little things like interior pieces and wiring lights.

The 16x10 Eagle Alloys came with the truck and we bought the 33x12.50 STS's for $300 so it was a good deal.

There are a few kinks to be worked out and we'd like to install a CD player along with power steering.

I've driven it and all I can say is the 456 gears and 4 speed make this truck a beast. First gear is very low and in 4th gear it tops out at 50 mph. It also has a locker in the rear. The truck overall is very beefy lol. Sorry for the long story.

Now that is one fine looking truck! Don't like the mirrows. Maybe if they were crome. I can appreciate the original restore for using them. Thanks for the pics. That is just the truck I am building now. It's in the four flat tires thread. Saving this one for a favorite. Thanks again it's awesome!

Re: Our '68 K20

That is simply spectacular. Just as nice and clean looking underneath as it is inside and out.

My '68 K10 has chrome versions of those mirrors. I'm sure they're useful but they do seem rather bulky and out of place.

Re: Our '68 K20

You did a wonderful job of keeping it original. Original is not "my thing" but I think restoration is the most difficult to pull off as well as you 2 have done.

Outstanding job - Bob

Wow that is a beautiful truck! Actually, damned near flawless! Is that stock suspension height? Does it steer hard with the 33x12.50's and manual steering?

Re: Our '68 K20

There is only one thing about that truck I don't like.I don't usually like a restore as well as a slightly modified truck but that one is beautiful.I even like the 'original' paint. The wheels and tires look good. The mirrors may not be to the taste of some folks but they work really well.I like that you can still see the FD #'s on the visor.Should be a nice ride for parades. It looks like you managed to find all original trim and interior, but doesn't look like much of it is newer than the truck. You should be proud of the awesome job and truck. You should also treasure the memories you made with your dad while restoring the truck.

BTW What I don't like about it? It's not mine!!!
