Question Rear end???

I have had a loud roaring in the drive train ever since they put the 1 piece drive shaft in my truck.

I stopped by the drive shaft shop Friday afternoon that built it. I asked if he could take a ride and see what he thought. He first crawled under the truck and came out and said that the pinion yoke on the rear is worn. The little tab where the caps sit is almost worn out on one side. He said when I let off of the gas it's causing the roar.

I haven't gotten under it yet and looked but was just wondering if any of you have herd this before.

My next question is if this is in fact the problem can I weld the tab up and then grind it back down to fit the universal back in it?

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Rear end???

welding the yoke may be possible, but I wouldn't do it..being able to grind on the tab and get it right would be difficult....just get a new yoke if its worn..
ive never heard that cause a roar, but I have heard of it causing vibrations

Talking Re: Rear end???

I was looking on line for the part. It's cheap enough to just buy a new one. $100.00 for one so it will just get replaced.

Re: Rear end???

They do wear and break. I broke one screwing around on the street with my SM465 on a 1-2 shift. I welded a washer to the strap to get me around until I got another. It worked for as needed until I got the new one. But made zero difference in sound.

Sounds like you should replace it, but I would be surprised if that was the source of the noise. Will be interested in hearing your report.

Me to, The sound didn't start until they put the drive shaft in it. The rear end is the stock rear end. I know it has over 200,000 miles on it so yea I should change it. I'm not 100% on it being the noise though!
In all honesty I think it's from the drive shaft being hollow. I wear hearing aids and it's hard for me to pin point a noise and where it's coming from so I have to depend on someone else most times.

Re: Rear end???

Andy I would also double check your angles. Going from a 2 piece to a single piece will change the angles.
Mine had kind of a busy feel before I shimmed and got things better in line. It wasn't the sound but the vibration feel.
I'm not saying you don't have some parts that should be replaced but while under there I would double check that since it started after the change. Tremec has a neat ap for the phone that walks you thru the measurements once I got them to all check out properly all was very happy.
good luck
Dave

Re: Rear end???

Chances are the noise is just 200K miles of wear and always been there relative to the wear and mileage. Installing a one piece drive shaft only exaggerates or amplifies the sound of worn gears. Also, I don't know which truck your talking about but adding a one piece drive line changes your "drive line" angle and if the truck has been lowered it adds insult to injury in that the drive line angle has been reduced even further. You "may" have to shim the rear axle spring or trailing arm pearches rotating the axle to get your pinion angle back down to achieve what the General deemed correct. Is this your red LWB truck? If so, why a one piece DL over the much more stable and stronger two piece? As far as the little tab goes, buy a new pinion yoke before you have to replace the yoke and the drive line...
