My "new" 1968 c20

I figured I need to start a new thread . This will end up being my build thread. 1645 miles round trip. 13 And 1/2 hours down to south Carolina. Was nice seeing flowers left my house after a ice and snow event. We stopped in Winchester Virginia in the way back this after 22 hours out of 36 in the truck I was done and yes I said we my wife loves these road trips. But it was well worth it the only rot hole on the truck is on the passenger side of the hood. I'll let the pictures talk

Some more. Last time it was on the road 1996 they had a plate on it from another car. Couldn't park it without a plate on it.

Re: My "new" 1968 c20

It's a 250ci with a 4 spd granny think it's a 4.10 rear axle haven't checked it yet. I'll post the spid tomorrow. Need to check the fuel system. Truck runs for a few minutes then dies no gas when I pump it,let sit 10 minutes starts right up. New tank and rebuilt carb . So I'll check the pump delivery. Thinking it's a clogged filter or the tank sock.

Re: My "new" 1968 c20

Your pickup has 68 Gold Anniv paint. Not an every day find!!!

Anniversary pickups were made in any and all ways, all options...Yours is a little different. Can't wait to see it all cleaned up.

I've asked for a Golden Anniversary section in the 67-72 area, has not happened yet..

Looks like at least some money had already been spent on it, looking forward to progress!!!

Re: My "new" 1968 c20

Only 50th anniversary trucks were gold? Most of the truck is the original paint. Drivers door and passenger front fender look to have been repainted.

Re: My "new" 1968 c20

Looks very solid and original. Longbed stepsides are all about function, and the traditional look of a no nonsense workhorse will grow on you. Should look great after a good clean up. If the 4.10 ratio is not on the SPID, it has the standard 4.56 ratio ( easy pumpkin swap when you find the donor ).

Your truck doesn't look like anniversary gold to me - I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess it's a 525 paint RPO - saddle, but who knows. There were other golds in other years, but 68 was a one-year only mix, a very distinctive gold (RPO 551) and I believe it was only available in special two tone scheme, white on top and bottom, which yours isn't (the first special two tone btw, predecessor to the higher end two tone of 69-70). Looks great by the way, very little rust and straight. Nice buy.

Nice truck, still have it's original wheels and caps? Pics of spid when you have a chance. Good luck with it!

Re: My "new" 1968 c20

Its saddle . Looks to be the original rims and caps 17 inch splits. Has the original Jack too.
I worked a little on her this morning. Pulled the fuel line to carb cranked it over and got two or three pumps of brown goop . Pulled the tank sending unit i tore the sock getting it out.Tank was replaced in 13 but they must have left stale ethanol gas in it . Going to pull it and get some muriatic acid to clean it. I took a pic of the spid and the fuel pickup.

That's a cool truck. I'd like a long bed step side, but can't quite talk myself into getting another vehicle to work on. Getting too old for it, I guess.

A new tank with THAT sender, I don't understand the previous owners thinking... Likely in a hurry. They could have at least cleaned it up and cut the old sock off. I wonder if the float rheostat was any good?

Re: My "new" 1968 c20

Got a new sender unit today from partsgeek. Com. All stainless and a brass float. Took the tank to a radiator shop today . I'm doing it myself 100 to clean and 45 to coat it . I can buy a new tank for 165 delivered from summit. I put phosphoric acid in it this morning with a whole bunch of nuts and bolts. I should be able to reinstall it tomorrow or Thursday. 15 $of acid.

It's no wonder these places are few and far between . I brought a 3 row rad for my AMX to get record . 375 $ I can buy an aluminum rad from DeWitt for 250 $

I think after 6 years even a new sender would have been toast

Re: My "new" 1968 c20

I have the original sender in mine. I only had to replace the brass float because it sprung a leak.

Well I soaked the tank last night with phosphorus acid . Looks pretty good just need to slosh it around some more get the nuts rolling to knock off whatever is left. Hard taking a picture of the screen on the lizard cam . For 38 $ at Walmart thing is pretty good.

Took out some of the wood bed floor. Braces and frame still had factory paint.

Congratulations on your find!

I wonder why it does not have a silver or white face grill? That truck looks very original to my eye.

I really like those vintage fog lights too!

I was just going to post about the fog lamps. Seems they are from a Mack truck. Bet someone restoring a Mack is looking for them. They are in great shape
