Pogeying. It was a Buffalo thing.

Back when I was kid in my high school days we used to do this during the cold winter months. Luckily no one ever lost a finger, hand, or even worse. We all survived some how. We would just throw on winter boots and grab a hold of a bumper (when they were real bumpers) and hang on! In the Buffalo area this was known as Pogeying. I hear it is also referred to as Skitching. I don't know of anyone outside of the Western New York area that has ever heard of Pogeying. As an added challenge pogeying was usually accompanied by some Genesee beer or Genesee Cream Ale. I'm amazed sometimes that I'm still alive.

Ha, that brings back some NW Indiana/SE Chicagoland memories.. in that neck of the woods, we indeed called it "skitching" - and I have no idea why.

Around these parts it was called hookey-bobbing.

Re: Pogeying. It was a Buffalo thing.

I never knew it had a name but I would ride the back bumper of the city bus in West Haven Connecticut back in 1981. I remember a few "snow days" when school was closed and the snow was packed nice and thick, I would grab the bumper and ride the full bus route downtown and back to my bus stop in the West Walk Condominiums. It was all kinds of fun. I did get knocked off a few times when my foot would catch a pot hole, and just come sliding to a stop. Walk to the next bus stop and wait. I still can remember the sound of the chains on the back tires too. I was 13 at the time. Looking back I wonder how I made it out of my teenage years with the amount of stupid things I did!

Re: Pogeying. It was a Buffalo thing.

It was skitching for us also growing up on Long island NY. One guy was killed in the early 80's doing this. One year we did it on a hired plow truck, an old Autocar dump, pissed off the driver something fierce, we hid in the woods and grabbed on as he passed, when he saw us he stopped, we will run away then cut through a yard an get on again. Thanks for the memories

I got a few weeks detention from Vice Principal Kraus (remember him Dan) for doing it in the school parking lot at lunch time.

Re: Pogeying. It was a Buffalo thing.

Where I came from we called it "Bumper Shagging" get a good pair of worn out running shoes and hang on,remember one time we found a old 1970 chev truck hood laying oit behind a old garage,we could not afford a sled,we dragged to the "Big hill" loaded about 4 of us on it and down we went, hit some bumps, flew off, said what a ride, and did it again,If I did that today, would probably be in the hospital, man the memorys!

Yeah, I noticed those Keystone Classics right away.

You guys were city folk. All us country folk down gravel roads just pulled old car hoods or big truck inner tubes behind a truck or tractor. If I’d been your neighbor I would have been hanging onto that bumper right beside you though.

An old car hood turned upside down and dragged behind a skidoo at 50 miles an hour should be terrifying but somehow it was the best time of my life.

Re: Pogeying. It was a Buffalo thing.

Shagging, as so they say in Detroit.

We had two rather large rocks at our school bus stop we would wait behind for unsuspecting drivers. It was the stop sign there that always got em!

School teacher or the like would always pull up like clockwork in a VW bug. We used to see how many of us could hitch a ride on that thing.

One day, even with the rear engine, there was so many of us latched onto to that thing like locusts it just sat there and spun. We did not let go. For some odd reason the driver never confronted us. We stayed there for over 3-5 minute and they were just putting on the gas. I know she seen all of us as some only had one hand on like a huge smiley face on her rear.

One day, my dangerous buddy, thought to out do everyone. He hitched the school bus 7 miles to middle school. He was complaining all day cause his shoes had holes in them from the dry spots he managed to skip over.

Fun times for sure, no one ever got hurt thankfully.

Then there is the snow up the tail pipes, 5 of us hiding behind the drifts armed to the hilt with snow and ice balls. It wasn't any fun till they would chase us. Boy some of those guys would get pissed!

Re: Pogeying. It was a Buffalo thing.

we just called it bumper skiing. we also would hide by a stop sign and jump on with out the drivers knowing. every once in a while we would get a crazy guy driving an they would fishtail to try and throw us off. great times

It was out in the sticks desert where I grew up. We used to take cardboard boxes and slide down the hills. Yuccas, prickly pear cactus, big rocks. Yeah, we're lucky to be alive! Guys out here used to do it on roller skates.

When I was a kid we live in the Denver area and we called it bumper hitchin. I remember manhole covers is where I’d always lose it. I forgot all about those times.

Re: Pogeying. It was a Buffalo thing.

Haha, we called it bumper shinning.

I had a friend who relied on it to get him home from school during the winter months. He'd hide between parked cars and when a driver came by he'd run after them and hang on. Its amazing his arms didn't get pulled out of their sockets.

Great picture by the way.

Re: Pogeying. It was a Buffalo thing.

Up in North Idaho it was Hooky Bobbing. It was against the law and the local county mounties loved to ticket drivers and any kids they could catch. (I guess there wasn't much else to do in the winter.) I don't remember anyone ever getting hurt doing it but the "Adults" were sure it was dangerous.

we never really had a name for it but we usually grabbed a small saucer sled and stood on that so if we let go or got tossed off we would slide farther

Hi Rick, how could I forget? He would try to put the fear of God into you. We never did it in the parking lot at school, but we always got in trouble for doing burn outs in the school parking lot.

Being from the same town outside of Buffalo, did you remember it as Pogeying?

We always used old car hoods. I'm not saying I'm old but there was a large coal yard close to the shop where we hung out. The driver would race through there trying to sling us over the coal piles. None of us died but a few got beat up pretty bad....... Yup, still good times.
