Stake Pockets, anybody use them?

1988 K2500 standard cab, longbed, fleetside. There are 3 stake pockets on each side of the bed. I'd like to put a rack on so I can haul long lumber. The actual pockets are 6" deep and could accommodate a 2x3, but the opening on the bed rail is smaller than the pocket. I thought about cutting down a 2x3 to fit, but I want as much strength as I can get. Now I'm considering opening up that hole so I can use the pocket. Has anyone built a bed rack? out of wood? What did you do with the stake pockets?

No pictures but I have see a few farmers use then. Mostly you see them on the older year trucks, least in my experience.
