Chains

Has anyone done anything else to their chains beside putting rubber sleeves over it? I like the look of it hanging without the rubber tube over it. Has anyone tried dunking them in like Flex seal or something? I heard plasti dipping them but people say they wear out. Trying to prevent clear coat scratching! thanks

I once saw some plastic chains on a tailgate. They looked ok from 20 feet away...

Re: Chains

Plastic chain?! Puhleez.

I posted a thread about alternate ways of covering chains awhile ago so my new paint won't get chipped. In my experience the clear tubing looks cloudy or yellows over time - ugh.

I wouldn't mind ordering these and I like them as is but I'd prefer something simpler, no two tone. Since I'm a baseball fan, maybe something incorporating a baseball style stitch but nothing over-the-top with colors of my favorite team or anything like that. Just subtle.

Re: Chains

I've scene clear vinyl/plastic coating they use as a rock guard that seems to hold up from chain abuse. Very simple and easy fix. Rhinoskin, trimbrite, and 3m are the first that come up on google

Re: Chains

Has anyone considered Vinyl coated cable ??

i was thinking of doing this instead of the chains on my 58 , just buying the cable lengths i need , then soldering or welding a hook on them , similar to what is on newer trucks , except they hook on instead of being affixed to the tailgate , that way its covered so it wont scratch up the paint banging around , and its not the same old chains you would expect ..... yes/no ??

Re: Chains

if you decide to use cable you could get a hydraulic shop to press on the ends and it would look pro. phone around first but a lot of those hose shops also make custom brake flex lines with stainless outers (I had some custom built for my motorcycle) and they also make winch cables and park brake cables so they would likely have the tools and supplies to fab up the ends. also, maybe a set of tailgate cables from a newer truck could be fitted, they already have the ends and are coated.

That is what I used, heavy thorn proof ones. Need to cut a slot at the middle which is bottom in hung position to let the water out so the chains do not rust. Even then they can rub side to side working on the paint. This time I went with inside latch and cables.

[QUOTE=Dan in Pasadena;7912449]Plastic chain?! Puhleez.[quote]

It was hilarious! It was on a truck shell in front of an ice cream stand. It looked ok from the parking lot but as I approached I knew something was off. Fake chains for a fake truck. Too much.

I ordered OE covers for mine years ago. Stepside trucks made into the late '80s had 'em but maybe NLA? It took a bit of work for me to find the numbers even back then.
