Show Us Your In-Bed Fuel Doors!

I've spent probably 4 hours on the Internet (on 5 different attempts) trying to find a reasonable fuel door to fit over my Mustang tank. I've cruised Ebay too, but I can't tell quality from crap.

I changed from the stock 8 boards to 7 boards so I wouldn't have to cut the center bed strip. My center board is 7-1/4" wide. My preference in doors is a reasonably flush rectangular unit, either billet or stainless (no plastic), but feel free to post any solutions so others can benefit.

The closest I've come are the two at http://www.jerrybickel.com/fuel-syst...s-doors-1.html

If you've got pictures out there, and a vendor that sells 'em, I'd appreciate it.

For extra credit, I'd appreciate a source for a "bung" that will attach to the 2" filler neck, and accept a cap under the access door.

Thanks,
Bob

Here's a couple from Brothers. They also make one that allows you to raise a single one of the wood strips.

I installed one on a chevy colorado, it was a flush mount pop up gas cap from Drag specialties. I bought a wrecked Harley tank and cut the bung out. The pop up gas cap is 2 1/2" diameter. Worked out real nice.

Don't know that I'll be able to find a Harley donor, so I still need a 2" filler pipe/bung. (I will check the area for bike junkyards though...great idea!)

Would like to see other doors too if it's convenient.

I bought this and it works well flush mounted on the bed floor. Very cheap, too!

I've seen that one, and I like the way it looks. I'm sure I could adapt it to my 2" filler neck. Thanks.

This is a CPP kit that comes with hose and clamps. I think you can also get it at a boat shop. It is not a door, but if you can do this, it is simple:

Personally, I think the fuel door in the bed is cool, but that's just me. I'm into elegant, simple solutions. Chevrolet was so not into fuel doors in the exterior sheet metal that they ran them out the tail lights in '56 and '57. My Mustang tank is in, so I'm committed.

Re: Show Us Your In-Bed Fuel Doors!

Agree, not to put down anyone who has there there now. And if you actually had gear in the bed, how you going to fill up?

I bet you could put that marine deck filler in a stake pocket, recess it to be flush with top of the bed rail.

Re: Show Us Your In-Bed Fuel Doors!

Mine's in the floor of my 57, at the back in the middle. I cut my stainless bed strip and inserted it into the middle of the strip. I used a stainless flush/deck mount marine gas filler. Works Great! Besides, it must be alright because I won best 50's modified at a car show today with over 450 cars in attendance. YES!

Why would you smooth and shave everything on your project and then cut in a fuel door? Counter-intuitive........

As far as gear in the bed, heavy things go to the front, light things in the rear. Simply lift out of the way, fill with gas, and replace. Not too hard to do, unless you are moving gravel.

I don't know about "smooth and shave everything" cause I'm NOT shaving anything, BUT I'm not building a 55 year old classic truck to haul anything but a few miscellaneous items from Home Deopt and certainly not anything truly heavy or gnarly like gravel.

So, even though I think a fuel filler behind the license plate or behind a door in the fender would probably look best, that does represent a lot of planning, cost and work rather than just putting it through a finished oak floor with a polished stainless cap. I think that looks very nice. Just my $.02

Re: Show Us Your In-Bed Fuel Doors!

I guess this debate is just like Ford vs Chevy, Canon Vs Nikon, Schwinn Vs. Huffy, the list goes on. For me the fender or bed rail mount is the best option. It has nothing to do with looks but more to do with ease of use. I'm short, I'm fat I'm old. Leaning over a tailgate or fender to get gas into a bed mount is too much work for me. Heck I can't even lean over to get the bag of dog food out of my truck without opening the tail gate. Also if I have a brain fart and spill some fuel I prefer it to be on the concrete at the gas station than in the back of my truck.
All only my opinion and worth every penny you paid for it.

Re: Show Us Your In-Bed Fuel Doors!

NOW we're gettin' cranked up!

How about pics of a few more doors, and a bung/cap or two to finish off the topic?

Thanks to All,
Bob

My $.02 worth....

Is there any concern about fire?
We are warned not to fill a gas can inside the bed of a truck, static electricity build-up and the like.
Heres a Youtube clip There are other videos to be found.
So, is this a concern?
What makes a gas can in the bed so different than a gas tank filler neck?
I'm just asking the question, I'm not being critical of anyones choices.

This has nothing to do with the filler neck being in the bed vs. in the fender or elsewhere. Here's a good article on protection from static electricity when refueling:
