Attempting my first build 72 K5

Hey Mike -

Don't mean to hijack, but do you have the top bracket in this pic under your steering column? We both have 72 CST Blazers, and I cant find this part at all in the pile o'crap that the PO put in a few boxes from his initial disassembly. Its made me wonder if it was only on trucks pre 72, or trucks with manual transmissions. I say that because I have seen it called a 'pedal stop'.

Appreciate any help you can offer!

Yes, all blazers should have them also, I think I should still have a couple.

I think it's time for a little update. I've basically been a hermit in my garage all summer, but that's because I really want to get this on the road.

I cleaned up my heater and AC evaporator core box. Took it apart, cleaned it and painted it black using SEM Trim Paint. I swear that stuff is the best paint in a rattle can.





I sent all my AC stuff out to Classic Auto Air in Florida (Compressor, Hoses, POA Valve, Exp Valve, AC Controls) and had them go through a refurbish or replaced with OEM.

I ended up swapping out carburetors and adding a fuel pressure regulator. I went with this carb because it has the fuel inlets coming out the passenger side and this makes routing the fuel line much easier.

I used Summits SS braided lines and fittings for the plumbing

I had to redo the routing for electrical to make room for the duct hoses so I took everything out and started from scratch.

Finally figured out how to get the speaker mounted under the dash. Ended up having to drill two holes for the bracket because there wasn't anything for me to mount it to.

Rear Carpet installed. The Chrome strip in the back was a PITA to get the carpet seated inside of it.

I know the rubber floor mats are upside down but I didn't take another pic when I corrected them.

The engine bay is just about done. Need to get a battery and run the electric choke wire back to the fuse panel.

I should be firing the motor up by next week if I don't run into any setbacks.



Grille and bumper mounted. It's starting to look like a truck.


Steering wheel in. I really liked how this looked on Ironcaine's.

BEUTiful! Isn't it amazing how much room those under dash AC hoses take up? I was always in awe when I thought of how the assembly line workers did that all day every day. Lol

Thank you, Chris. The 2 piece rubber floor mats came from the factory. I don't know if there are any repos being made.

I had my evaporator pressure tested and it checked out okay. I got a new condenser from GMC Pauls which I think comes from Old Air Products IIRC.

Classic Auto Air did a great job and their customer service is awesome to work with. Highly recommend them.

I know right! When I just had the wiring in there, I was like... "Wow look at all that empty space".

Correction on the rear carpet strip hold down. The tail gate strip seats underneath and the chrome strip sits on top of the carpet.

The parking brake cable housing is moving when I set the parking brake cable.

The pic on the left is when park brake is off and the pic on the right is when it is on. When I release the PB it barely comes back and I think this is bc the cable housing moves.

The clamps holding it to the frame and inner fender are tight and I even used a 1/4 clamp to squeeze down on it even more.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Unless the clamp that is on the parking brake itself needs to be clamped tightly? You can see a little bit of free play in there. I did have to pry it open to get this over the cable


I'd appreciate any help on this subject.

I just installed mine this weekend as well. There may be other opinions, but here is what I did:

* I took the retainer clamp and pried it open wide enough to fit over the solid metal piece of the cable. I did this with one side in a vise and used a pry bar to open it open.

* Once I put it back in the Blazer and got it over that solid metal piece of the cable, I used channelock pliers to close it back down enough to get the retainer bolt started.

* Then, tightened it all up - no more slippage.

Keep in mind the cable slides inside that sheath, so you can position it around a little bit to get it where you want it.

Now, If I did it wrong, someone can correct me and help us both!

BTW - does anyone have a source for the return spring on the ebrake assembly? My PO must've thought those were optional - I don't have one.

Thanks, Chris. I'll give it a try and see if that works. Did you ever get your splash shields on? I'm having the hardest time getting the bottom bolt in. Wondering if there is a sequence to doing the trick.

I did, but I do not like the way they fit at all. There was no one way to get them on for me, just a lot of fiddling and fussing with them.

I was in the process of assembling my seats and the drivers side adjustment rod & hardware doesn't seem right to me.

There's the two pieces (with small spring and clip) that slide through the mounting brackets and guide rails. The one on the inside (toward pass seat) looks correct to me.

The other side is throwing me off. It only goes in one way and I think they should go in the same way, but the square hole on the left side mounting bracket only allow it slide in this way shown here.. see pics

Hey Mike - I think we are using the same AED throttle cable bracket. I am struggling to get the cable to fit, have broken two trying to 'bend' them into an S shape to make the angle back into the firewall. It also looks like you went back to the factory kick down bracket versus the one you fabbed up.

What cable brand/part number did you use and any issues with making that angle?

Also, did you switch back to the factory kick down bracket?
