I really do not know what this red thing is used for

Are there any of you that has one of these or knows of anyone that has one and can tell me what it is used for ?

I know what the 3/4 inch wrench is ,,and the measuring tape that I put beside the red metal object to give you perspective ..haha

I have had this for at least 15 years and it's about time I find what it is for ,,,,,,,,,I am asking some of the greatest minds on the internet here for the answer I told the wife ,,so don't let me down ,,ok?

It’s a bar to “lock” your toolbox drawers. It drops in from the top and when you close the lid it keeps it in place and prevents them from opening. It slides into the narrower slot on the left as pictured below.

My wife wanted me to get one of those so that I don't attempt to fix anything.

Never mind, it was under the rubber mat... The bottom section also has one.

Re: I really do not know what this red thing is used for

Now that my sons are older, they don't get tools and take them out to the back yard...and leave them. I should have locked my tool boxes back then. You name it, I've found it, sometimes with the lawn mower. My wife does quilting, and has some expensive scissors, which I am not allowed to use. That never stopped her from glomming onto my nice all-steel pruning shears and then leaving them out, where even in California they get ruined. It's happened several times, too! When I need scissors and those expensive ones are the only ones in sight, I use 'em. What goes around comes around.

Re: I really do not know what this red thing is used for

Thanks ledd... I bought the tool chest and lot a of other tools from a guy who was selling out and moving to Alaska .. I brought the chest home and put in my shop loaded it with tools and never even tried to fing out what this thing was.,. it was the same color as the Craftman chest too,,,. so it just sit in the top tray .. So the other day I decided to move the chest to my garage and that's when I said to myself ,,I should ask you guys what it is ,, I didnt get a key when I bought the chest ,, so this will be good when I want the chest locked ..

Man I hear ya on that one. Allow me a mini rant please.... Who else is sick of the guys who play dumb when it comes to fixing anything. They'll say something like "You don't want me to fix it, I'm all thumbs!" Really? You can't turn a screwdriver handle??? I call it laziness. There're thinking "Why bust my knuckles when I can shrug my shoulders and get someone else to do my job" I understand the issue when it comes to anything remotely complicated, but I say they've just developed a bad habit of laziness. Sounds like I may need some counseling on this one!

Here is what my tool chest looks like and I see no slit hole to use the bar on either the upper cabinet or the lower cabinet,,unless I am missing something about how it is used,,,,as mine uses the lid to insert a strap onto each drawer at the rear to lock them or unlock them

I think that they were only used on rollaways.

I have a bunch of them. I haven't used one in a dog's age, fortunately.

Yes.. it is a New Britain brand ,, back in 1965 or so when John Kennedy shut down a lot of army bases ,, these sockets came from that era , I knew a guy who was boxing up from a army base ,,and he sold me a box of tools for $40 and this is where it came from

What I meant was that the rollaways were the only ones with the lock bars because there wasn't a lid with the drop-down latches like the top boxes had. I guess that would apply to mid-boxes as well, now that I think about it.

Steve ...I think you got it about all summed up.. I never had a tool chest like this one for my first 100 years (seems like it,, ) I do like using it though and I will label the shelves now that I have remodeled my garage into sort of a car.truck shop
