Re: 72 Cheyenne Build Thread

Thanks Pete,

Yeah, I stole the wheels off your brother's truck...couldn't help myself and I will return them soon!!

I do have the correct molding and rubber (checked and rechecked), but the aftermarket stainless had a little bit different curvature than the factory piece.

The leg that extends into the rubber is a tad deeper on the factory molding as well and seems to hold the rubber in better during install....either way it's been a HUGE pain in the @ss!! Now I gotta buy another piece of glass and talk about being "gun shy" during the next install attempt.

They say it's not the destination, but the journey that counts!......after 6 years, I'm getting a little tire of the "journey"!!! LOL!

Re: 72 Cheyenne Build Thread

A pain in the "glass" for sure...groan.
What about sourcing a nice original set of stainless? I want to change my rubber out soon, and replace with the stainless version. Now I'm a little spooked! Where did you get your rubber and stainless at? I have an original set of stainless I might use, but it's not perfect. A little dent here and there

Cheers
Pete

Re: 72 Cheyenne Build Thread

Got both trim and rubber from the Car & Truck Shop. My Factory mldg had some dings in it as well, so I thought I would try and fix em. Basically I just tapped out the dents so that they were "high spots" and sanded them down just like I was cutting and rubbing out a vehicle. Ended with 3000 grit and finished with a metal polish....they actually turned out very nice.

If you can make the factory pieces work, that's the way to go. The little bit they fit better seems to make a big difference.

The reason my glass broke during install had nothing to do with the quality of the rubber or stainless.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Build Thread

GLASS UPDATE.....

....Well after 5 install attempts (2 from "glass guys"), one screwed up molding, and one broken NEW window, I finally got my front window in!

I ended up using the original factory stainless trim....just had to remove some dings and polish it up. The little bit it fit better just made the install easier.

Very nice truck. I wish I still had my 72 Cheyenne. Not as nice as yours...but it was a nice truck. 402,4 speed factory tach.

Don't we all have that..."I wish I would've kept it" story. For me it a 68 Camaro Z/28 replica that was a blast to drive. I bet that 402, 4 speed Cheyenne was pretty cool and I gotta think kinda rare with the 4 speed.

Mine is actually a true Cheyenne that was ordered with a "3 on the tree"!

Re: 72 Cheyenne Build Thread

Few more progress pics.

Didn't like my seats sticking up in the back window so I took 1.5" out of the rear and 1.25" out of the front of the factory brackets.

Gonna make some nice covers to finish off the brackets and the seat will get re-upholstered in either all Black or Black with some Graphite inserts or something.....not quite sure yet. Gonna use one of those similated leather materials.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Build Thread

...as posted in the regular forum.

Well, I finally fixed the dented fender from my wheel falling off mishap....got some longer studs, so it won't be happening again!

Got the seat back from the upholsterer...turned out nice. Had the inserts for the doors done with the lighter Grey as well.

Since I had the front end apart to fix the fender, I decided to paint the grill a few shades darker Grey and I like the way it turned out...more aggressive looking.

Also installed some insulation on the underside of the hood which made a big difference in engine heat transfer to the hood, pretty much eliminated engine sound from outside and also gave the hood that "quality" thud sound when closing it instead of that "tinny" sound. As I said in a previous thread...it's definately function over form, but it looks alright.

Re: 72 Cheyenne Build Thread

Very Nice! It looks great. I especially like the grill. The factory silver is just too light for my liking, and gloss black looks tampered with. The dark grey is a great compromise, and looks better than factory IMO.

Cool Re: 72 Cheyenne Build Thread

Love The Look Of Truck, Always Liked Blue. I'm Going With Blue With Silver On The Bottom Below Body Line. You Could Use Aluminum Or Stainless Over The Holes In Firewall. Rims Look Perfect!!!!!

Still got the wheels (tires still mounted, but pretty wore out) and I will probably try to get rid of them locally....just easier. I don't have boxes or anything to put them in and not sure what it would take to ship. My zip is 95678 and I'm looking for $300 for em.

I've had it for quite awhile and I believe I got it from Turner ......I think that's the name and I don't think he's around any longer.
