The old numbers from the 1960's were "gross" horsepower, so that was with no air cleaner, open exhaust and no power robbing accessories. K

This is from the 1988 GMT400 info packet, but it is the same engine RPO L05.
I'm including it here because it shows the actual horsepower/torque curves. https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/doc...olet-Truck.pdf Incidentally - that's why we introduced the fuel injected TBI engines in the 1987 model year; to get a year early exposure before we came out with the GMT400 pickups for the 1988 model year. Truck management thought it was a bit to much to do an all new truck architecture and an all new engine all at the same time. K

I am very happy they decided to do the engine release a year early - fuel injection in the 87' trucks along with what is, in my opinion, the best looking styling of the 73-87 run (not everyone will agree here!) makes the 87' the ultimate squarebody. Obviously that doesn't make them a fire-breathing hp demon still, but the driveability is very nice.
