K20 regear.

In about a month I will be regearing my 10 bolt front axle to match my swapped rear axle which is 3.42 geared.

My truck is a K20 with a 350/350/203 combo with a part time kit, and 265/75/16 AT tires which are 32" on the rims I have. I will have new Mile Marker selectable hubs on the truck when it gets rebuilt.

Do I need to add a locker or posi in the front or does it lock when the hubs are turned.

Re: K20 regear.

One tire will lock, just like any other 4x4, unless you install a locker...then both will lock.............which if its a street truck, I would not recommend.

Re: K20 regear.

It will be just like any other open diff. The locking hubs simply lock the axles to the hubs.

Re: K20 regear.

So a good true track or Detroit locker is what I need then.

Re: K20 regear.

I've got a lunchbox locker in the front diff in my K25, works great. Heard good things about the True Trac as well...I think a full Detroit Locker would be a pain to have in front.

Re: K20 regear.

They are and just about impossible to steer on pavement or asphalt. I have a Detroit in the front and rear of my k10 and while the rear is livable the front locked is def off road only

Re: K20 regear.

Just for grins, what if you had a Detroit in the front and for street use in 4X4, you only locked in one side of the front?

Then if you really needed it, you could lock in the other for serious stuff.

Wouldn't that act just like a standard unit, assuming the Detroit had enough side bias to not just ratchet?

Re: K20 regear.

I wouldn't worry about it. The way I see it, if you're on a road and need to be in 4x4, then the roads probably iced, snow covered or slick with mud enough that you won't even feel the locker working up front. Otherwise it's probably not needed.

Re: K20 regear.

in slippery on road conditions, i would rather have no locker. anywhere. if you are locked in the rear and drive accordingly they are ok. to have a locked front and rear in 4x4 on a slippery road would be a mess.

my favorite thing for a front if you must have something and dont want to dump a wad of cash on an arb, is a powr-lok or however they spelled it. a clutch type limited slip that can be tuned with variations of clutch pack. i had the same one in the same truck set up light and then again heavy. in iowa corncob snowfields the tightly wound set up was the awesome. not nearly as easy to drive on a slippery road.

i would leave it open, unless this is going to spend a frequent amount of time in situations off road where it is very muddy or there is a lot of axle travel involved. locked rear and open front will take you a lot of places. my jeep is set up this way, and the only time i ever really want the front locked is in deep 18+ inch colorado snow.
