Eastwood Epoxy Primer

Can you guys give me some feedback on the epoxy primer that Eastwood sells? Have any of the painters here used this product and if so were you happy with the primer. Thanks for any info.

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

I've never understood the desire to purchase paint products from Eastwoods or Summit. You have NO idea what brand Eastwood sells. Does Eastwood offer tech support if you have problems?

For epoxy primer you would have to look hard to find a better one then whats offered by SPI.

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

From what I have read, Eastwood is Kirker with Eastwood label. Also not heard any negative feedback about it, hope it's good, just ordered some. No local paint Store here with a decent price, online gets it done. PPG would be my 1st choice, again not available locally.....SPI is very good also, Bought from them direct, Does Not seem to be an option now.

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

Any epoxy primer is a good thing to use regardless of brand.
It's easy to manufacture and nobody has one that's remarkably better than anyone else's to my knowledge.
If it has an activator and requires a scuff after a few days, you know you have a good epoxy primer.
Don't get all hung up on brand names.
Local paint stores will support your purchase with technical advice so I'd suggest going that route but their brand of epoxy will be a good one.

Thanks for the feedback. I will shop my area and see what I can find in way of epoxy primer. Not too many paint stores in my area to deal with.

Where are you at in Southern Ohio? I go to Ohio Auto Kolor in Newark, but they have locations in Lancaster and Chillicothe. The Newark store is always helpful and patient with my lack of experience and knowledge.

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

I am down close to the big Ohio river but just about 45 miles from Chillicothe. I will stop in and check out their store. Do you know what brand paint system they sell?

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

I've sprayed a couple of gallons of Eastwood epoxy and have no complaints.

SPI is nice. Unfortunately they can't ship to SoCal any more.

When did they stop shipping to So. Cal.
I got some from them just a couple months ago.

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

I tried to place my last order with SPI in June 2016. After they wouldn't ship to my zip code, I started looking for other options.

I'm in San Diego County, maybe that's different than Orange County?

Either way...I liked shooting the SPI and Eastwood epoxies.

Shot 2 quarts of it this weekend, followed by some high build primer. These were my last body panels on the truck to prep, so time for some color!

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

If they have local distributors in the area, I think you have to go through distributor. That may be reason for not shipping?? but I would have thought they'd tell you so....

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

I had a gallon of SPI shipped to me a month or two ago. Maybe ship it to a friends house or a UPS office.

I like Kirker (I also heard that it is what is in Eastwood cans). I have shot a couple quarts of it and it covered well and shot nice.

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

I shot a gallon of Eastwood primer just last week. Ordered and they delivered another gallon. I don't like their polyester primer but have no negative feedback on the epoxy. Gotta give it plenty of time to dry or it will gum up your paper real bad.
Do I think it's the best = NO.

Good enough for me and the girls I go with though.

Let me tell you that I've bought the paint I used from Eastwood, in part due to their tech support and location to my residence. Sure I could have gone elsewhere but being a 1st time painter, I talked to several local auto paint stores and determined Eastwood had as good a price and far better tech assistance. Everybody has their own priorities and preferences. To each they're own.

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

I am getting close to sealing my truck with Eastwood epoxy that I purchased a year ago. I always get ahead of myself. My question is do you do the filler blocking on the bare metal first or seal all then do the contouring? I have heard both schools of thought. I.realize I would have to break the surface before applying anything over the epoxy once cured.
What's the concensus? :

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

Epoxy goes on bare steel to prevent corrosion.
Filler goes on bare steel too so spray the entire panel, then sand it off just before applying filler.
This is the proper process.

Re: Eastwood Epoxy Primer

I talked with the paint tech at SPI and decided to go with their epoxy primer. He took the time to answer the many questions that I had and I appreciated that.

Question to Footstomper: When you say sand it off do you mean break the surface to give it some tooth for subsequent coatings, either paint or fillers? If you sand the epoxy off you destroy the moisture protection provided by the sealer. Filler absorbs moisture.

Well, you can do it like that. But, I spray epoxy on then lightly sand the top with 100 grit paper to scuff the top off. Leaving all the epoxy on. Put my filler on top of the epoxy. when I am block sanding the polyester top primer I use the epoxy coat as my "high point" to stop sanding at.

Not saying anything is wrong with applying filler to bare steel, as that is how we used to do it, but have not done that way in years.

More than one way to skin a cat. Find what works for you.

The best place to answer your question is the technical data sheets on the products you are using. They are readily available on the web.

However, to give a generic answer, you should remove the epoxy where filler is going, You're going to remove some anyway when sanding the filler. The filler will absorb moisture if submerged or left outside in the rain, but because you're not going to do that and are going to high build prime and paint, the filler is encapsulated and no moisture will get to it to cause rust. This is why it's so very important to never fill holes with body filler as the moisture will cause a failure.

At the end of the day, putting filler on top of epoxy is not a bad thing that will fail, but filler likes a heavier tooth than a simple scuff, so why not give it.

Good discussion.
I will refer to data sheets but it sounds like either way works as long as you pay attention to the details.

Attention to details is a great way to put it.

I'd like to add that an epoxy is designed to not only prevent corrosion unharmed, but it is also designed to prevent rust "creep" when harmed. That is to say that once scratched off, the steel will rust, but won't spread under your paint job.

Now if you have a deeper scratch that goes through body filler, you've likely got a situation that needs attention sooner than later anyway.
