My 72 Suburban project

This is my first post. I am just trying it out. If it goes through...this is my latest 72 project. It was found in a junk yard. No engine, trans, or front springs....obviosly 402!!! I had been looking for one that was stripped so I could do a throttle body/700R-4 swap. I wanted front and rear air and 3/4 ton for hauling. I paid $500 for the truck and bught a 100k mile 1990 model suburban on Ebay for $430 and swapped the engine, trans, complete wiring harness front to back. I used the existing fuel tank and added a fuel pump and return fuel line. I wanted the interior to be able to lay down for hauling...so I used a bucket seat combo out of another Suburban (91). I have not finished the inside yet...but I have front to rear carpet and the correct (NEW) seat upholstery for all the seats. Here are some other specs.

1972 3/4 ton...was a 402 (long gone)
1990 throttle body and 700R-4
Shortened original 1972 2 piece drive shaft
Dana 60 rear...its about a 345 ratio ???
Front and rear AC..I am upgrading to a Vintage air system this spring.
1991 bucket seats and matching fold down middle.
Close to the original green (new paint). I added the white top.
All new hardware, handles, knobs, bezzels.......
Interior is black and green.Original green door panels with new black armrests.
Black carpet, black seats, dash pad, visors, door lock pulls.
I have a set of white (match the roof) steel wheels with dog dish covers.

I also have a 72 4x4 blazer, 72 4x4 short, fleet, AC, tilt, tint, and a 72 GMC 5500 dump truck I use weekly...Lets see if this will post..trying picture now.

Re: My 72 Suburban project

I likey. Very clean stock color with added touch of H2 wheels. I saw your other post mentioning $40/wheel. Is that the going rate? Also any mods to fit on those caps?

Oh yeah, any engine and trans pics to tease us with too? Does trans tow well as original or did you do some mods.

Sweet!!

Re: My 72 Suburban project

Thanks for the compliment...Its no show truck but it turns a lot of heads. It was built because I have always had Suburbans, always been into the 67-72 trucks and it was time to start thinking about a different daily driver. My current Suburban (1987) has 300k miles on an un-opened engine. I wanted a 3/4 ton for hauling and AC was a must. I was tired of the bureaucracy involved in the JOKE the state call emmision testing and wanted a reliable vehicle that was over 25 years old, didnt require high insurance, high tag fees and all the other penalties we suffer for buying a new car and living in a metro area!!!!!!!. I toyed with buying a diesel or a vehicle with GVW over 8500 lbs. so I didnt have to deal with emmisions testing but I just threw in the towel and just built my own ride.

Thanks for the compliment...I have always had 67 to 72's is some form or fashion and my every day has been an 87 Suburban for 10 years.(300K and engine never opened) I got a wild hair back in 1999 and I bought a 1997 4 door 4x4 fully loaded, leather, black Tahoe with the 350 Vortec and 373 rears. I dont really know why...But I HATED it!!!! I kept it 4 months, sold it, and went back to the 1987 Suburban. I decided that since Chevy does not make a new engine worth owning any more (350) that when I wanted something new....I was just going to have to build it. I fugure the 87 might need some engine work in the next 100k miles so I might want to get the 72 finished so I have my new daily driver ready when I take the 87 off the road to work on. I need to finish the interior and climate control and it will be 100%
