Flexplate, what is it’s function?
Stupid question I’m sure but I’m not afraid to ask, I have never really understood it’s function.

Re: Flexplate, what is it’s function?
it connects the engine crankshaft to the torque converter...it also has the outer ring teeth for the starter to engage with to crank the engine....

Re: Flexplate, what is it’s function?
In all my years I referred to that as a flywheel

Re: Flexplate, what is it’s function?
flywheel serves the same purpose except it connects crankshaft to a clutch/pressure plate in a manual transmission setup...
flexplate is used in a automatic transmission setup...

A flex plate actually, well, flexes. There's a good video (that I can't find now) from underneath a high-horsepower Buick BB on a chassis dyno where you can see the forward/back flexing when they get on and off the throttle. At the 1:30 mark in this video below there's a good representation of the forces that happen inside the converter that helps to understand why the flex plate flexes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN9_5Z_bEy0

Re: Flexplate, what is it’s function?
A Flywheel also produces a ........wait for it........flywheel effect.
The firing pulses from the pistons are stored in the heavy weight of the flywheel and given up smoothly into the transmission. In an automatic transmission that job is accomplished by the torque converter so no "flywheel" needed. Just a connection plate.
