Stacks

Plugging away on my future flatbed and have been liking the idea of exhaust stacks. I really don’t know a lot about them so I’m curious if it’s possible to make them permanently mounted to the bed but a larger diameter so the easily slip over the more permanent part of the exhaust? That way if I ever want to make it a dump bed they can raise and lower with the bed.

The bed will be about a foot wider (total) than the cab so I think having them come up through the front corners of the bed would be a good look. I’ll build in some sort of guard system so they don’t get damaged if it ever gets loaded up.

Re: Stacks

The old tilt cabovers like Peterbilt worked that way: the stacks were attached to the back corners of the cab and stayed with the cab when it tilted.

Of course the engine is not normally running when the cab is tilted.

Unless its a C&C (cab and Chassis) IMO it's dumb.

Re: Stacks

It is a cab and chassis. And I’m not thinking a style like that movie truck, it’s a little to over the top for me.

You mean like these on my ramp truck. I had the dual exhaust ran up about a foot over the bed. I cut holes just big enough for the 2.5" pipe to go through. He welded hangers to the bottom of the bed to hold the exhaust tight in the hole. Then put the stacks over it and clamped them down to the head ache bar. The picture of the hole is looking up through the stack before the exhaust was done.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Stacks

Yes but I think my exhaust should only just come flush-ish with the bed just in case I ever want to make it a dump bed there wont be any interference with the exhaust as the bed raises. I wasn't sure if it was ok to just let the stack slip over the regular exhaust with out a clamp style seal.

You can always cut the exhaust off if you go to a dump bed later. Then you may need a seal.

Thumbs up Re: Stacks

I've not built any guards on mine yet and really haven't need them but it maybe a good idea. I need to get home this week and drive it some. I haven't been home in over month and need to get it going before the picnic truck show on the 10th OCT. I had the gas tank and carburetor redone right before I left. I put 5 gallons of gas in it to tune the carburetor. I never did take it on the road. I left that afternoon for the beach.

Well, the old cabover Pete had some sort of bell that fit down over the chassis exhaust. I can't explain it because I never paid that much attention to it. We were working on something else but I don't remember what.

I can't really see the advantage on a light truck unless you want to ford deep rivers. Most light/medium flatbeds the exhaust terminates at the back of the muffler, between cab and axle. For that matter, so does my old pickup except there's no muffler, just the cat

Nothing to do with any sort of advantage over the out the back exhaust it has now. Everything to do with I like the look on this style of truck. Kind of like a lot of things when we play with cars and trucks, stock is usually perfectly fine, but I think a lot of us like to personalize our rigs.

This is a 157 inch wheel base, one ton, dually truck. It will have a flatbed that is 7 ft wide and at least ten feet long. Its a look I loved as a kid, and I think on this style of truck, like Andys, its a good look.

Agree 100% it's just a cool looking mod that I have always liked.
Has 0% to do with performance and 100% to do with looks!
If I ever get the right chance I will add some flames into the mix as well. But I'm scared I would mess something up with them.

Re: Stacks

If you're going to do it, I suggest moving the bed back a little and mount the stacks to the front of your headache rack, rather than through the bed.

You could go look at some old COE trucks and see how the stacks are set up, but of course the pipes would be way huge for what you want. I would think that a good custom muffler shop could fabricate some sort of tapered joint, for a price.

The fast & furious truck is what I was think of when I did the ramp truck. Some day I'd like to put a Duramax diesel & Allison transmission in it.

Re: Stacks

I know you want the stacks not past the cab..
but if you decide differently ,,how about like this look ,,it was a Dodge factory done deal...
I also bring this look up as years and years ago I had a 56 chevy shortbed and it had one stack on drivers side that came up thru the side step ..

Re: Stacks

The bed will stick out approx 6 inches further on each side so o suppose if I stick them in the front corners they will be a tad past the cab. I do love lil red express trucks.
