Re: 454 vs 496 vs 502

I scored like a 20,000 mile engine out of a motorhome 800 bucks like new... ported with 30 hours of finess and pain cut my 3 angle valve seats on the peanut port heads.. the bottom end was already decked like ten, 0.020 head gasket yielding like8.1:1 instead of 7.9:1.. took a lunati 60202, had it custom ground on a 108 LSA to get just under 7.4 DCR , Gets 15in of vacuum with 16degrees initial and a q-jet at say 700 rpm .. cheap regular street sized headers... There is your 500+ ft lbs of torque... here is a similar with junk peanut heads( unported) same cam on the 112 LSA on 8.8:1 compression dynoed:
http://www.chevelles.com/forums/show...=309772&page=2

that 530 ft lbs like over 500 avrage with them garbage heads unported

We did run it on a dyno, if you go to my profile you can click on the album and there is a chart with the results. The final pull was 556hp 5400rpm and 606 ft/lbs 4400rpm. It's pretty much an old fart's pickup but you sure can surprise people once and awhile.

That sounds like a fun engine. I've been seriously considering building a 496. Would you be willing to share the basic info on the engine?

You say this is a budget build... what kind of budget are we talking? I too would like to know some specs if you don't mind.

Now that I look back maybe low budget was the wrong choice of words, the original goal was $3500.00 but when it was all done it was closer to $5000.00 in the pickup, headers to air cleaner. I did spend extra on the retro roller, not sure that was the best money spent. My brother-in-law worked at a machine shop at the time we built the motor so that was a big plus for me, donor motor had a bad crank and 781 heads, the roller rockers and intake were purchased used. I was able to sell the motor out of my pickup to offset some of the cost as well. I didn’t budget for the little stuff, belts, hoses, wires, rev limiter, new fasteners for bolt on accessories, etc., that stuff adds up fast. This is my first motor project so I learned a lot, wished I would’ve been a little more aggressive with the cam and saved up and went with aluminum heads. (If I had the money it would have a 572!)

Here's some of the specs., I bugged a few folks on the site for their feedback durning the build, we have some good guys on this site!

I would consider $5000 a good price for what you've got, all inclusive. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, thank you for sharing the info on your engine.

That helps those of us considering building a 496 in that we know a little more what it takes to achieve a given power goal.

You would probably have to really mis-match parts to get numbers this low. I have been studying the crap out of the 496 builds and can't believe what I am seeing. Car Craft did a cylinder head shootout on a very mild 496 (little 274 with .555 roller cam). They decided to throw in a set of dog sheet stock 2.06 valved peanut port heads. I say dog sheet because of the lack of flow for a motor this big. As choked down as they are on this size inch motor, the fricking thing still made 521hp and almost 600 ft lbs of TQ. That is insain. I just picked up my 4.250 crank yesterday. With my ported 781s on either 2.19 or 2.25 valves, I should be closer to the 600hp mark!

Yes Mr. Fab......I will keep you posted!!! lol

Naw.....don't mess with those little motors. Here is one of Mark's (vortecpro) little 650HP 496's in a 3.08 geared 71 vette.
