Rattle in front end?

In my 03 Duramax I can feel and hear a rattle in the steering wheel. It is not in the cab. Truck has not been used hard and has about 55,000 mi. I complained about this when it was still under warranty (nowhere near as bad as now) and they squirted some grease somewhere and it went away until it was out of warranty. I have lived with it but it seems to be getting worse.

I'm sure this has come up before but I can't find anything on it.

Does anyone know of a recall or TSB or even what needs to be done before I take it to the dealer and is this a safety issue?

Thanks in advance for the help I know you will provide.

Re: Rattle in front end?

I have an 02 Tahoe with 22,000 miles that has the same problem. My wife took it to the dealer several times and got the same results. They told us the factory did not use the right grease in the steering column joint. It never did fix it but it was all they would do.
I have a friend who had his column replaced under waranty but mine feels more like front end than steering column.

I would also appreciate any information you guys might have.

Re: Rattle in front end?

There are some aftermarket pieces that are beefier available. Better than the factory piece.

Re: Rattle in front end?

My '05 would get an oil change and steering shaft before they started lubing them. Pulling the shaft and lubing it seems to work better than replacing it, but I hadn't seen anyone here put in an aftermarket shaft.

Re: Rattle in front end?

If you join the forum at http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php and do a search on steering rattle, you will find extensive info on it.

My 05 2500Hd is getting really noisy. I need to look at it.....there is one thread there that said something about a hose clamp that eliminates the rattle....

Take care,

Misled
