Finally got my new Super 4x4! Photos & Questions...

Bought this truck from a very nice board member. I've been waiting for weeks, trying to figure out shipping. Finally showed up last night, and I am glad I opted for enclosed shipping - the driver's dually and trailer were encrusted in 2" of salty, grimy ice. It was a bad weather week on the way across the country. This truck is pretty clean underneath, it would have been a bummer to have the entire underside rusting first thing.

I've attached some photos, since we all like 'em so much. Also have a few questions for you knowledgeable members of the board!

-On my last K10, there was a bracket bolted to the frame that prevented the driver's front leaf spring shackle from moving back. Nothing on the passenger side, and it rode like crap, so I yanked the bracket and the ride got a lot smoother. I assumed it wasn't stock, but here on the new truck the exact same thing is there. What is this thing (photo below) and what's the purpose? I can see the bolt holes are slotted, so I could move it back some, but why limit travel - isn't that what the bump stops are for?

-This truck came from sea level. I live at 6500 feet. It wasn't too happy idling at first (very slow and rough, black smoke), but I did a quick-n-dirty dialing in of the carb fuel mix screws and it's much smoother and idles at about 1100 when warm (which seems fast, but that's with the idle speed screw all the way slow). However, I bottomed out the adjustment before ever reaching the point the engine began to slow or stumble from lack of fuel... does that mean I'm going to have to re-jet this thing? Pretty standard setup - 350 w/ a Q-Jet.

-Finally, a silly little question about the AM/FM radio. Worked when I first got in it; turned it off and then back on, that simple, and nothin'. No light, no sound, no power. It looks like the power goes directly to the fuse block (with no fuse?). All other dash lights, etc, work great. Everything looks good without pulling the radio; I figure it's either an internal short or maybe a problem with the switch. Anyone experience something like this? And I assume to remove the radio I'm pulling the knobs off to access some shaft nuts, but if that's not the way, someone stop me now...

More photos.

And no, the garage is not quite as dark as the engine photo would suggest...

Sorry forgot about your questions. Before pulling the radio test for power, it's probably something simple. The frame bracket is on everyone I've seen and not sure of the purpose...

Does it have a inline fuse? If it's straight wired I really think hard about a fuse.
Truck looks great though!

It looks great. The few extra $$ for enclosed shipping during winter is worth it.

Re: Finally got my new Super 4x4! Photos & Questions...

I have been told the bracket on the frame was a safety device. In the event of a front impact, it would prevent a broken spring from coming through the driver's floorboard and injurying the driver. Never was a passsenger thing. Bruce

Re: Finally got my new Super 4x4! Photos & Questions...

I believe they were in a recall around 1971 after GM was forced to install them due to some people getting killed by a spring run up through the floorboard and into the driver on a head on collision. I guess they must of negotiated the drivers side only expense as it was more prone to a head on on the driver side with the other on coming lane. The recall kit includes the bottom leaf with a curled leading end and the cage strap to be welded to the front eyelet and that bolt on rear piece you have pictured above

Re: Finally got my new Super 4x4! Photos & Questions...

Thanks everyone! Looking forward to getting this thing on the road. Going to keep it original as possible... would love to find some 6-lug steelies and dog dishes for it.

BLT, Undertaker, thanks for the info on that bracket. Never would have guessed that... I suppose I'll adjust it back some to clear the shackle as it operates and leave it on the frame.

Andy, no inline fuse unless I missed it. Just plugs into the fuse block, although I could have misread the labels. Looks original, along with all the rest of the wiring... unlike my last truck, which was a bird's nest under the dash. So weird how it worked and then just quit, light & sound all at once. Something's gotta be wrong with the power.

Re: Finally got my new Super 4x4! Photos & Questions...

I heard the recall brackets were to prevent losing steering in a front end collision. I don't know why all trucks after '72 didn't need them anymore.

That truck will be happy in SW Colorado!

Great looking truck! That's the exact look I want for my 72. What size are the tires? I guess those are 8" wide rally wheels?

Re: Finally got my new Super 4x4! Photos & Questions...

Andy, thanks for the photo. All the labels on my fuse box are legible, and as shown in your photo, the radio just plugs in, apparently without a fuse. Were the factory radios unfused, or is it supposed to have an inline fuse?

Tim, thanks again for checking the truck out for me. So far, so good, although I can't really drive it anywhere until I get it registered on Monday. Even found some NOS 1972 Colorado Truck plates for $10...

3sonsdad, the wheels look to be 15x8. Recently restored, with new paint, new chrome on the centers, and nice beauty rings. The tires are 32x11.5. Personally I'd like some 15x8 steelies/dogdishes with BFG 33x10.5... got a set you want to trade?

Thanks again for compliments and answers, everyone.

Here is a thread on the wiring. It states a fuse is in the backside of the radio but not sure if it's a factory one are not.
