Quick question getrag to nv3500 swap

I'm putting a nv3500 in to replace my getrag.
My truck is a 91 c1500 4.3.
Will the vss signal from the 04 be the same as the old one?
Just wondering if the TBI will have a fit.
Thanks

Don't know if they are the same but the TBI wont care because they are both manuals. Your speedo might not like it! If you have both transmissions you can remove the speed sensors, mark the tone ring with a paint pen & count the teeth. If they are the same # you are good to go. The sensors are different but that shouldn't matter. You will need the pigtail for the '04 sensor to splice into your harness.

OK hadn't thought about checking the tone ring.
Thanks for the info
Got lucky and found a shift tower at the junkyard.
Was so excited that I forgot the pigtails.

I thought the TBI needs the vss signal to monitor fuel.

Re: Quick question getrag to nv3500 swap

I got the shift tower on the trans(in the back of the van)
All the gears shift smooth. And by turning the input they turn smooth.
Except for reverse. It's stiff to go into gear.
And a bit harder to turn
It's raining again so tomorrow I will look at the old trans to see if it's the same way.

Re: Quick question getrag to nv3500 swap

Every thing is looking good .
Both have the same tone ring.
So I'm hoping that will work.

The only thing I need to change is the clutch plate.
The one that comes with the trans will not ,
Mate to my flywheel.
In 99 they changed the plate so that it has larger,
Damping springs
They also changed the fly wheel so it is beveled.
To fit the disk plate. I ordered a new plate
To fit 91 - 98 and it fits fine.
Taking the day off and gonna put her in.
Been taking forever to do it seems.
After my heart attack couple months ago
I have to go piddle a little at a time.
Thanks for all the help.

Re: Quick question getrag to nv3500 swap

By plate do you mean the pressue plate? It cant fit 91-99 as they changed to the internal slave cylinder in 96 which requires a 96+ pressure plate. Either one should fit your flywheel fine, I have the correct flywheel for my 78 on the engine with a 98 model clutch kit behind it to match my 96+ NV3500.

If you use the older pressure plate with a newer trans, the clutch wont ever engage. I found this out the hard way....

Re: Quick question getrag to nv3500 swap

No I meant the disk friction plate.
I got the clutch shell and disk, with the trans.
The friction plate changed as well as the
Fly wheel to accommodate the new disk.
Yep the clutch fingers changed for the
Internal slave cylinder.
The great thing is that the slave cylinder
Changed from that funky plastic hose,
To a braided stainless.
Much easier to get a fitting to my
Master cylinder.

I thought about using the flywheel that came
With it. It wasn't drilled for balancing like
Mine was. My 4.3 is externally balanced
And somewhere along there they added a
Internal ballace shaft.
So I just used a 91 disk.
Ours was about worn out,. Ordered a new
One.
I have the flywheel from the 04
And a almost new disk(friction plate)
If anyone needs it.

Re: Quick question getrag to nv3500 swap

OK I have the trans in.
The support braces that go from the bottom of the trans to the engine mount bracket won't fit to the newer trans.
They added a lot of webbing to the casting of the new case.
The bottom of the bell housing has three large holes. I'd say 3/4 or so.
You can tell something was mounted there.
Went to a few junkyards today and didn't
Find any with this style of trans.

Does anybody know if there is a bracket that mount in these holes.
Then maybe braces to the engine mounts.

On the bright side I found the easiest was to bleed the clutch today.
With the stainless braided line on there I simply
Removed the Master cylinder and fished it
Under the truck.
I opened the bleeder put clear hose on it.
Fed the clear hose up to the engine bay.
Then I put a funnel on the hose and poured
Brake fluid in the funnel.
When the fluid settled to the bottom I bench
Bled using a 1/4 inch ratchet and a deep well socket
To push the plunger.
Took about ten minutes to set up.
As I pumped it I held the plunger in till the air
Went to the top of the fluid.
Release it and it sucks fluid in.
Withe the master cylinder lower than the slave it pumps the air out in about ten strokes

Re: Quick question getrag to nv3500 swap

Well I figured out the brackets for the 04.
Went to a used car lot and looked under.
Seems that the bolts for the supports are actually
Bolt hole to the oil pan.
The made the aluminium oil
Pan into a lower support and the dust cover.
I will just make my own bracket. And a dust cover as well.
Thanks everyone.
