Re: Project "Hulk Jr"

Ok so today I installed the torque converter lockup from Bowtie Overdrives. In the instructions it showed how to wire a tow/haul switch. I had a switch so I added it. Took the truck for a ride and it does drive different in regular and in the tow/haul mode. I was driving 70MPH and was turning about 1900-1950 RPMs. Nice. Before it's was 2300-2350 RPM or so.

Since I was there I went ahead and changed the engine oil, adjusted the e brake and rotated the tires.
I was able to get the trans cooler installed but am waiting on a couple russell fittings. I will have them Tuesday and will post a couple pics....

Very cool, had a 700r4 in a 2wd 68 GMC some years back with the lock up on a manual toggle switch acted just like another gear we loved it.

Re: Project "Hulk Jr"

Received a new (or new to me) wiper motor and pump from a board member. It's out of a 72 but should fit. Currently the one in the truck stops and won't move. Have to move by hand.
I am also building an electrical plug adapter to install a late model trailer plug on the truck. If you remember the one on the truck when we got it was melted into a ball of plastic.

Pictures to follow soon!

Re: Project "Hulk Jr"

Well I got a chance to make the trailer plug/receptical adapter and harness. Turned out great.
I just need to run the brake controller and 12+volt power wires to the engine bay.
While I was at it I went ahead and painted the rear bumper after I cleaned up the whole the PO cut with a torch.
Taped the holes for the receptical and license plate. Now I need to get a new license plate light and install it.

I also got the new to me wiper motor and pump installed. Works great just need to mount the windsheild washer bottle and put the hose in it.

I'm very curious how you will like the Old Air Products kit and the ease of installation. Been pretty impressed with everything we have gotten from these guys so far.

Brett, this time I ordered the complete servo system. The hulk project will utilize the original AC controls.

I looked into most of the systems and most use the same internal parts is just different in design.

Re: Project "Hulk Jr"

Hello guys, well 3 days of 100+ degree days of working on Hulk juniors AC install.
I started by removing the control panel and some of the ducting from the inside of the cab.

Then I removed the heater core and fan assembly from the engine bay and painted the firewall to match the rest.

I increased a couple holes to the correct size and hung the evaporator. Than I noticed I didn't drill the condensate drain hole. So out the evap came and in and out and in and out and finally got the hole drilled and grommet installed. Re hung the evaporator and tightened it down for good.

Re: Project "Hulk Jr"

Next was to get the expansion valve and heater control valve installed. It was pretty simple but I did have to install new longer heater hoses.

I installed the condenser and accumulator and didn't really take a picture. With the heat I was just on a roll and forgot. Maybe it was just to hot and I was a little loopy.

Re: Project "Hulk Jr"

This is the only one I have of the condenser. Before I secured the trans cooler.
You and see the aluminum bracket resting against the grill.
You an also see the AC compressor filler pulley on the late 90's serpentine belt system.

Re: Project "Hulk Jr"

Next I focused my attention on installing the compressor. As you can see in the pictures I had raised aluminum valve covers. The depth of the compressor hit the edge of the valve cover. So I decided to get out the tig welder and learn how to tig weld aluminum. After a few practice passes on a scrap piece. I decided to just go for it. I quickly learned that you really have to clean it to get it to weld nice.
It was nice that I was able to have the equipment to fix this at that moment. If not no telling how long it would be for me to get this corrected. Or how much money it would've cost me.
In the pictures I had the compressor clocked on its side but I could not of used the hose ends that can with the kit and make it right.
So I had the freon line connection exiting the top.

Re: Project "Hulk Jr"

Next was to get the holes cut in the dash to install the vents.

Was pretty easy. I used black zip ties to secure the vent hoses to the diverter box and the vents.

I noticed that the aftermarket systems do not use a fresh air vent to pull outside air in. You can see that the intake to the evaporator and the discharge of the passenger side cowl vent are about 6" away. Not sure that matters but it's an option.

If anyone wants a specific picture let me know.

I do love the amount of room in the glove box still. Vintage air it would barely hold the registration and insurance paperwork. Lol.

Brett,
yes it has been charged and is working good. but the pressures are a little off and I am going to call old air and ask before I do anything.
ambient temp was 85 degrees and had pressures like 35 low and 250 high
should be about 45 low and 225 high.
Any ideas???

Good to hear it's working good, I bet your boy is stoked! This chart says a low & high condition could be an expansion valve or orifice tube issue?

yes I agree but I am going to call them and see before I pump it down. not sure what the problem inside is as I was very careful when removing the caps and blowing out the hoses before hooking up the lines.

kind of frustrating!

Re: Project "Hulk Jr"

ok so I talked to tech support(Matt)at Old Air Products and he said that the condenser on a 67-72 was larger then there normal systems and will take more Freon then what the instructions read. (Instructions read 30-36 oz's depending on how long the refrigerant hoses are.)
I put 36 oz's or 3- 12oz cans. He told me that I will need a few more and that the discharge air temp should be about 40 degrees.

He said the way the evaporator is set up the low pressure will be a little lower than normal charts.... he said 35-45 is a good number when the chart reads 40-50.

I don't believe that the outlet temperatures are that low.... I could not find my thermometer. I will pick one up today and check!

Re: Project "Hulk Jr"

Hey guys sorry for the delay in my posts. I added a little bit more Freon and working great.

drove the truck out of town on a 105 degree day. AC pumping and the truck drove well. The truck water temp did get to about 200 but I don't think that was bad.... air was so cool we actually turned it down to low.

Re: Project "Hulk Jr"

ok so before the install of the ACsystem we were having problems with the Fitech FCC getting to hot and boiling the fuel in the FCC which is a problem in hot climates. I built a aluminum shield around the FCC and cut a small hole in the Radiator support so that outside air would get to the FCC. I will post pictures and updated the Fitech thread also

We have not had a problem since....

have more plans for this build tune in shortly!
