Can we weld crossmembers?

I had to replace the last two crossmembers in my 67 3/4 ton frame because of rust issues. I used 7/16 fine thread bolts to replace the rivets. I was thinking of also welding them in but I am not sure if I should since they were not welded from the factory. Does anyone know if it is acceptable to do?

Works just fine if you never change engine or trans or both with a unit that requires relocating the cross member. Better to bolt it in with Grade 8 hardware.

Re: Can we weld crossmembers?

I would just double nut the bolt then tack the end of the bolt and nut together. That is the best I could come up with as a homemade type rivet. I would think some twisting and movement however slight would be needed there to allow the truck to flex and ride properly. Jim

X2 if it's welded Id be willing to bet down the line you'll be dealing with frame cracks... There needs to be some small amount of movement in my opinion.
