Spare Tire Mount for 1973 GMC 2500 3/4 ton

I'm working on my 73 3/4 ton. Need to know where the spare tire goes---Driver side bed or under carraige behind differential When I bought it; the spare tire was loose in the bed. I want to install it where it was originally placed.Name: Envy.JPG

It's a matter of choice. The factory mostly put them under the bed, behind the axel. You could get a bed mounted bracket (dealer installed??) for the bed. There would be holes in the bed and upper rail, for one of those. I like the under bed mount better.

The spare belongs under the bed in front of the rear axle. You can get most of the parts from LMC, or you might get lucky and find the apparatus in a junkyard. Most people remove the spare in order to accommodate a receiver hitch. If you move the left side support bolt forward about an inch or so you can still get the spare in that location but it will be tight. If you use an aftermarket monster tire for a spare it will not work.

Bed mounted spare was optional, RPO P13.

The bed mount looked more macho with a gnarly 750-16 tire. I always figured it might even help in a rollover to give a little extra support to the drivers side cab. I wish I had a good pic of mine. My bed is full of junk at the moment.
