Front Park Lamp Electrical Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Working out the last "bug" on my '58 GMC.

Front parking lamps turn off when headlights are on. They are only on when the headlight switch is halfway pulled out in park lamp mode. Is that by design or should they come on with the headlights like all my other later model trucks?Brand new wiring harness and switches.

OOPS...wrong terminal. I put tail light (black) and park light (purple) on the "tail" terminals on the headlight switch. Left the "park" terminal empty. They all come on now with headlights on.

Originally they did go off when you turned the headlights on, up though 1967 for most rigs. In 1968 the govt decided we needed side marker lights on our vehicles and as the side marker lights tied into the park light circuit they changed the headlight switches so the park lights stayed on when the headlights were turned on.

A lot of us have changed to the newer switches that power the park lights both ways. I have a switch out of a 70 something that I scrapped out about the time I was building the truck.

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
