AD hood part ques.

The assembly manual shows it as a "rear reinforcement pad", I have nothing to compare it to and cannot find it listed anywhere - is there something else that would fit ?

Re: AD hood part ques.

Are you referring to the gasket that sits on top of the cowl where the rear of the hood rests? That gasket supports the back of the hood to seal and keep vibration down while moving down the road. I seam sealed the inner support brace under the hood but there wasn't another gasket that I am aware of.

Nope, I have that one.

the assembly manual, section 11 sheet 5.00, shows a pad on the rear of the reinforcement piece. there is a scar from what was originally there on my hood - just wanting to keep it in shape and from rattling down the road, when she runs....

thanks, Don

Re: AD hood part ques.

Mine didn't have any other pad or signs of one when I got it. I'll ask my friend who sells parts for these trucks tomorrow and see if he carries anything like that.

Thanks Keith, I imagine it was a tar soaked pad of matted horsehair or something as nice, back in the day. Perhaps something neoprene would work.

Re: AD hood part ques.

my 58 had a rotted foam rubber piece in there when i disassembled the hood
i had some 1.5'' wide foam i used in it's place, i cut a couple of 3'' pieces to insert above the brace
not too soft or it won't dampen anything

Re: AD hood part ques.

Hey Dan, I'm guessing but, on my '54 there is a brace type thing on the underside of the hood that goes from hinge to hinge and there is a pad type thing between it and the hood. Referring to "View A" I think this is what they are referring to. Hope this might help. Clay

Re: AD hood part ques.

Well Don, I screwed up big time and I will try to get things straight. When I was looking at my hood, I was using a flashlight and couldn't see real good. "View A" is of that splice looking thing at the center of the hood and I misspoke. My hood does not have a gasket between that brace thing but had a material type stuff that looks like Scotts pads you use to sand with. A fiber looking thing that is stuffed between that brace and the hood. It is only at the bends on each side and is about 3 inches long. Just enough to fill the void at the turns. I don't know if that is factory, dealer option or that the previous owner stuffed that stuff in there to keep it from rattling. Clay

Re: AD hood part ques.

I'm thinking that some hoods I have have a pad between the brace and the hood metal and some don't.

What I have seen is pretty much what Donaldo suggested and that is what appears to be tarred carboard type of material.

Re: AD hood part ques.

I prepped and primed the underside of the hood as best I could without taking the bracing apart - there are scars where some form of pad was installed, and it's in the manual. There is definitely about 1/4" of space all across the back side of the cross brace, figure I'll get some 1/4" strips of wetsuit material and see how it fits and if it rattles. It's a fairly clean hood, center strip came out intact with hardly any rust underneath same with the side and front emblems. Had been repainted only once, from black to tan.
Thanks for all the replies and ideas.

I'm thinking it would be too solid to absorb any vibrations or flexing in the hood.
