Running too rich.

Hey guys,

Here is what I have. I got a motor form a friend, well at the time a friend. He told me it was a 350. But with Lil research I came to find it was a 305 or 307. It was running really rich so I did the plugs and got a new 1406 carb. I have the new carb for about a month. It runs alot better but it still really rich. I thought it might be over carbed. Ask around and can't seem to find anyone that can get the smell away.

Thanks guys!

Re: Running too rich.

you need to tune the carb. Those things are too rich for a 350 out of the box, let alone a 305.

Running too rich.

Edelbrock 1406 should always be used in pairs.
With a short length of chain, between two edelbrock carbs, they make a really good set of wheel chocks.
Easy to hang up on a nail when they are not in use.

...the proper useage for dual quads A couple things on the edelbrock carbs....1 the elect choke versions are calibrated leaner than the hand choke models. 2 they are fuel pressure sensative(5 -5 1/2 psi is enough). 3, is float levels (my 1407 had a float off spec, out of the box)....probably bounced or dropped in shipping). After the foats were set, & I verified that I didnt have over 6psi on the pump, it didnt take too much to tune the 1407 on my 383. My brother has a 1406(elct choke version), on a 305 in his S-10, & hasnt touched the carb jetting ....it runs fine. he runs the stock tank elct pump, with a regulater to cut it to 5 -5.5 psi. This motor is bone stock, except for 4 a small crane cam & a set of Z28 springs /headers. For the guys that love Holleys(I do), I will say that the edel is not as tuneable , but is a very reliable carb set up properly. What have you done with the ign curve? crazyL

Re: Running too rich.

Thanks guys for all your input!!

I really don't know much about carbs, learning though. Someone was telling me that it could be a cam issue, too big, too small. I really don't know what cam is in there now?? But my question is can If I tune the carb perfect will matter if the cam is too big or to small? Or would I need to put in a new cam and go from there?

Thanks!!!

Re: Running too rich.

I would do a little read on ign tuning(should be a "sticky" @ the top of the page. A lot of "carburation problems" have been traced to the ign(old worn pcs, improper curve , ect). crazyL

Re: Running too rich.

Always set your total timing first, then work on the carb. The sticky at the top of this section is a good step by step for the total timing.
