I found a rusty, beat up 72 Chevy 1/2 ton short wide box for $400.
I couldn't be happier I have always wanted one of these trucks.
I am going to try to keep it on the road as much as possible while i work on it, not because I have to, because I want to drive it.
Stats:
1972 Chevrolet Custom 10
2wd, short wide bed
250 l6 engine
3 Speed (originally 3-on-the-tree)

The way I found it, I couldn't get the money out of my pocket fast enough!!



I borrowed a tow truck and took it to it's new "forever home".

Day one, I Cleaned it out removed the interior hosed it down and got it running.
New points, condensor, coil, battery and cables, it sputtered to life. Dig the custom air cleaner

Interior cleaned out, not too bad :-)

I am not a fan of the gas tank in the cab, so I yanked it out

...made a couple plugs out of an old fender, one for the filler hole and one for the CB antenna hole

I welded all the holes, did a little grinder work, and smeared a little micro-lite on top:

I I forgot to take a picture of it welded up but, it turned out okay.
One nice thing about a $400 truck, I'm not afraid to cut it up and make it the way I want it

I picked up the title for the blue Chevy last night and got the life history of the truck.
From '71 (new) to '74 This truck was a "fish hauler" It supposedly hauled fish from Morrow Bay to San Luis Obispo.
The PO's Father bought it in '74 and used it as a farm truck (still in CA)
PO (Christa) told me when they bought it (1974) the bed and tail gate were "so rusty, you couldn't throw your beer cans in the bed or they'd just roll out the back"

1981 the PO was given the truck by her father. She found a new tailgate had the truck completely repainted, the seat re upholstered and drove it off to college (still in CA).
Some years later She and the truck moved to Idaho. The old truck was retired to short fishing trips, dump runs and fire wood duty. On one of the firewood getting trips a chunk of wood was thrown through the rear window.

Somewhere around the turn of the century the truck quit running and they couldn't figure out why so, it was towed to a field, where it sat until very recently.
After Years of door knockers, notes taped to the mail box and people constantly asking "would you sell that truck", the PO decided to have it towed to her house in town, so as not to be bothered with all the inquires. She called a tow company and had it moved to the back yard. My Uncle [Tim] was the tow truck driver.

Tim Told me about the little short box that he towed and explained to me where it was. I drove there immediately after work ...It wasn't there, I couldn't find it, I gave up.

Fast forward 2 or 3 months I get another call from Tim. The PO called him and wanted to know if he would be interested in purchasing that "little blue Chevy" that he had towed out of the field. It was just going to be more of a project than she and her husband had originally thought.

Tim called me---> I Called the PO ----> we settled for $400 ---> I borrowed Tim's tow truck and brought the truck home

I don't know if anybody cares but, I thought it was worth documenting

Great deal and nice project. It's sure nice to have the history that goes along with the truck. It will make it that much more special when it's done.

Fresh 165hp l6, T5 5speed, fix the rust, clean it up, paint it, lower it...
Drive the wheels off it.
