Signal/park light problems

Got a bit of an electrical problem, hopefully you guys can help me with. I installed an EZ wiring loom & everything worked fine until I fitted the lights in the grill which are original old stock. There's a double element bulb in there 1 for park & 1 for signal. If I signal left or right all 4 lights flash. I disconnected the park lights, now when I signal right it's ok but when I signal left the front left & both rear lights flash. Any ideas? Thanks

Re: Signal/park light problems

Did you look at the bulbs themselves to see which filaments are lighting up?.

Re: Signal/park light problems

Hi no i didn't, i just went out to have a look. I unscrewed the lens & dropped it on the floor smashing it into a score of pieces. If i didn't have bad luck i wouldn't have any! I can't test it anyway as I've got the starter motor of due to it destroying it self. So I've removed the light & i ran a continuity test across the 2 wires & there is a feed, so I'm gonna look at that & super glue the lens for now

Re: Signal/park light problems

So it looks like there is supposed to be continuity across the 2 wires as has the bulb. I would of thought they'd have been 2 seperate items. Should the parklight go off each time the signal comes on or is the signal element brighter than the park?

On my 54 the park light goes off with the flash, but at present I don't have right hand side lights, for some reason all the bulbs on the right were removed when truck sold to me

Slightky off subject how did you find the ez wiring to install

Re: Signal/park light problems

I used the EZ harness too and my recollection is two independent wires to each lamp that ground thru the housing. One wire is the parking and lights one filiment, the other is signal and flashes the second filament. I sound to me like it may be a grounding or socket issue that is allowing feedback thru the lamp (power seeking ground thru the parking filiment).

Re: Signal/park light problems

So should I solder or bolt a wire to the bracket on the inside that the bulb holder is fixed to. Then ground the other end to the chassis?

Re: Signal/park light problems

Right hand without the sidelight on, both elements flash & the rear seems to flash as it should. When the side light is turned on you can only just notice that it is signalling.

Re: Signal/park light problems

Check your bulbs. I had some issues years ago with a '57 chevy and the problem turned out to be a bulb where the glass had come loose from the base and when the bulb was installed, the glass turned crossing the two filaments and causing a back feed. Coincidentally, this happened right after i installed a new wiring harness so naturally I thought it was a wiring issue. Found it purely by chance.

Re: Signal/park light problems

Is it wired correct then, the indicator I would of thought would be brightest with the park light the dimmest

Re: Signal/park light problems

Are you using their double contact pigtail in your housing or did they send you a new housing that has the proper pin locations for an 1157 Bulb.

The stock socket has straight across pins. 1157 style bulbs will not work in them.
We used to get a pigtail at the parts house for double element bulbs and there is a double element bulb that has straight across pins that will work but the process is a bit tricky as you have to make sure that the contacts on the bulb are in contact with the contacts on the pigtail. Without going to town and looking in an actual parts catalog I can't come up with the number for the double element bulb with straight across pins though.

On mine I finally gave up fighting with it and replaced the stock sockets in the stock housings with universal sockets and that ended the problem.

Re: Signal/park light problems

The original lights came with a conversion kit that had a new bulb holder & bulb.

Re: Signal/park light problems

Ok, I am understanding then that the "bulb holder" is what I referred to as a socket?
