Forged crank, stroke of crank.

I'm sure there is something I'm forgetting....

Can you get the number off the back of the block? Otherwise it will look the same

Re: 454 366 bbc

366 is a tall deck, .40 higher on the block per side, allowing room for 1 extra piston ring. These were not used in 1 ton or smaller, strictly a big truck motor. 454 has balance weights on the flywheel and harmonic balancer. 366 crank is high quality and the same as 396/402/427, 454 is different. 366 has the smallest bores of the BBC's. If this is a big truck the 366 probably has cast iron headers. They tens to use 4bbl spreadbore Holley carbs, often with speed regulators.

Re: 454 366 bbc

On my 1977 C50 366 is a tall block engine, uses a wider intake manifold with 2 thermostats, has exhaust manifolds that cannot be used with clamshell motor mounts, will not have vac adv on distributor. Has an extended snout on the balancer with 6 bolt holes for the pulley set. Holley carb with either vacumn or electronic connection to the distributor and accessory brackets that are lower (PS) and higher (alt/ac) than you can use on a 1 ton or smaller truck. Also the oil pan would be much larger capacity than the 454.
366 should all have forged crank, good rods and 4 ring pistons. In as much as a 366 looks like a 454, the intake manifolds won't interchange without spacers so you always have 2 thermostats and the way they fit in the 10/20/30 series trucks I can tell if it's a tall block or passenger use engine and many others can also. The 427 TB I'm putting in our 93 K3500 dually is alot closer from valve cover to hydro boost brakes and AC condensor than the 454 would be, and in total height from oil pan to top of carb is very close to a 500 Cad with the Performer intake.

Re: 454 366 bbc

my 427 truck engine has "TRUCK" cast into it above the oil filter boss. the water pump is a truck block only pump, and the distrubutor can either be a longer tall deck dist. or the standard V8 dist. depending on the age.

mine is going into a suburban 4x4. hopefully i can get p/s and alt bracketts to work.

Re: 454 366 bbc

I recently got one of the 366's to replace the blown 6.2 in my M1008 CUCV.
It's now bored .60 over and I'm collecting the parts I need for the swap. An oil pan, water pump, exhaust manifolds, oil pump and pickup, motor mounts, fan/pulleys from a 454, new Dart intake manifold, and other assorted brackets and other items.

I'm assuming that Dart intake is for the tall deck block??? Not many make intakes for tall decks, and most are for racing applications. I have not kept up on what's currently available, though....

I was contemplating this swap, but it seemed to be too much trouble. I had the stuff for a low fan water pump setup (the high fan water pump, is TOO high), it solved the water pump bypass deal (using a stock intake) , but the larger size radiator hoses, inspired me to swap the engine (I got a deal on it) for some other stuff, I could use.

Keep us informed on this, you might have some ideas, the rest of us can use...366's were in school buses, and all kinds of medium duty trucks (although this stuff is getting more scarce every day w/ the high prices being paid for scrap these days).

The oil pan in the picture MIGHT work if it's a 7 quart pan, if it's a 10 qt. pan, no way...
I'm assuming you are not using the 366 balancer...

Re: 454 366 bbc

found this on you tube granted not real informative but give a good idea of what a tall deck looks like in a newer truck. I seen my dad do a few tall deck installs on some cars and a few trucks granted i was 9 so i cant comment on the details but they make adaptors for short deck manifolds to fit usually about $120 but well worth it to address the cost of a tall deck performance intake ebay would be a good place to look. I remember mallory had a standard vac advance distributor that would replace the junk one these engines came with most likely it's still out there or since gm has a quite a few tall deck crate engines out there im sure a distributor without a slip collar could be dug up easy.

Re: 454 366 bbc

There are 3 talldeck engines-366,427 and 454.
I have a 427.
The easiest way for me to tell them from a regular big block is the distance from the top water pump mounting bolt hole to the surface of the blocks deck.
It's about 3/8" on a tall deck and even on a regular big block.
The actual difference is .4" as measured from the center of the crank to the top of the deck.
You can't over-rev a t.d.!(Well,you can one time!Then look for another one!)

So the 454 in the 2000 and new medium duty trucks is a tall deck also???
I didn't know that......I assumed it to be a standard deck. That extra ring theory is an oldie......

Is the 495 (8.1) in Med duty trucks tall deck also???

I have a new oil pan for it.
New standard BB water pump.
Nice set of original 454 exhaust manifolds.
New oil pump and pickup.
Dart 41215000 Tall Deck Oval Port Intake that uses the GM standard length distributor.
I have quite a collection of motor mounts, pulleys, and brackets now also.

The gasser switch from the diesel is underway!

Still gathering up items and working on he hookups. Trying to keep the 24v accessories intact.

Re: 454 366 bbc

Back in the 80's there were a couple guys who used to bring 366's to my machine shop all the time. Back then a lot of school bus companies were scrapping their fleets and the 366 were everywhere. They did a fair job racing with them.

I'm just curious why on Earth you would run an intake that starts at 4,000 rpm and a motor that stops there?

Without intake installed, the top water pump bolt is just a fuzz below the deck surface, on a shot deck regular engine. On a tall deck, just under 1/2"...

This is a working 4x4 truck.
I did not want to run the stock intake or water pump, or fool around with spacers to use standard deck BB intakes.
There are few available intakes for tall deck BB. Even less for peanut port heads.
I called Dart and explained everything I wanted from my application. The tech there said in this application it would start to pull at 3000.
The truck runs great. The old diesel would scream at 65 mph with the 4.56 rears. The gasser sounds great and runs very smooth at highway speeds. Works well when I'm off road and in low range. Pulls and haul loads extremely well. The engine has lots of torque and does not seem bothered at lower rpms. It was not put together as a fuel miser.

Seems kind of unlikely but working is all that matters. As long as she can move under her own power, Then good enough! I do realize there is not much out there in the TD intake world.

I've alwas wondered what was the point of the dual thermos?

Re: 454 366 bbc

The dual thermostats was done to allow a larger volume of water to flow, probably for the case of an over loaded dump truck driving around the job site at redline all day. The GMC V12 has three of them. The member here who's doing the v12 truck posted the water flow specs and the water pump moves a ton of water. It was probably easier to run multiple standard thermostats then try to design larger ones.
