Door seals

I'm ready to put door seals on. I found this YouTube video...

https://youtu.be/qDBojIza-TA

Do you all agree this is how to do it? He let's it gets kinda dry and I'm worried about what is too dry. Do you guys have anything to add? What about the corners? One post I found the guy mentioned cutting into the seal a bit.

Re: Door seals

I like this method, but also tape off the doors.
That cement will dissolve paint.

Also get the steele rubber thin gasket.
Cost more but works better.

Re: Door seals

2 votes for steel rubber gaskets everywhere.
I wasted dozens of hours trying to get my doors to close properly. I finally gave up and ripped every apart. Through away another recommended gasket manufacturer- Then I Bought the smaller thickness door weather stripping from steel rubber. Doors close easily.

As far as the internal gaskets that lay flat on the inside of door- Those where a b*!C to get on- Soapy water is your friend. take your time and go slow.

Re: Door seals

Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure I saw a thread where someone said the LMC seals didn't work well so I bought from Classicparts. I hope they work out. I bought one of those folding work stands and I plan to pull each door to clean it up and do it good the first time.

How long do I wait to stick the doors back on?

Re: Door seals

I started with the seals from classic parts.
They are precision rubber.
Nice seal, but too thick and had to replace with the thinner steele rubber.
Major pain to do this.

When and if you do the windshield the precision rubber ones work best.

Re: Door seals

90% of the door seals/ weather stripping out there on the market for these trucks will be too thick.

I had my door hinges adjusted perfectly then put the sof seal weather stripping/ seals on only to find that both doors were way off. I fought with the doors for 4 or 5 days trying to figure it out? Big waste of time.

The thickness of this material is much more critical that you would think. I can't over state this enough. Even compressed the thickness is too much in most cases for the 1947-1954 doors.

Get the steel rubber thin ones they are the only ones out there that make these seals that are thinner. If not you will more than likely be wasting lots of valuable time and a little money like I did

I've looked at Steele web site and it doesn't show a thin seal. I'm checking for a friend, if you have a link or a part number for the correct seal, I would appreciate it very much...Jim

Re: Door seals

This is the seal I used.
I think I ordered 30 feet, but you might want to measure to be sure.

They have one with adhesive on it now also.

That's what I thought would work, just wanted to be sure. Thanks...Jim

Re: Door seals

Got seals on but I need to adjust doors. It was getting too dark to really see so I will mess with adjustment later. Driver side shuts pretty good already but passenger needs a good shove. Guess we will see. I had already bought the Classic parts seals months ago, hoping they work out. So far... Looks ok.

Re: Door seals

OK!

Seals are definitely too thick! Takes a good shove to get it shut. And this picture shows how much it makes door stick out.

Jbarron, I looked up that part number. I need to call them. There is a kit with that part number included. 28 feet of it plus the other door seals and it's cheaper than getting the seal by itself.. at least online.

I'm so bummed out. I already had the seals, and I read an article with classic parts used and he was happy.... Maybe he was paid.

Re: Door seals

I think Softseal is out of stock but I looked up the filling station too.

There's also an option for a thinner 1/2 inch seal versus the standard. I wonder if I should go that route?

Re: Door seals

Here's the plan. Since these are sold by the foot I'm gonna buy a foot of each of the following.

Steelerubber. Part number above. It's the thinner of the two options.
Filling station. Standard size.
Filling station. Tight clearance option. It's not as thick.

I'm going to glue a foot of this stuff at the door latch area. This is my problem area on both doors. Hinge area is flush. I'll post back what fits and what requires a slam of the door.

I briefly thought of ripping it all off but after seeingbthe tight clearance option and becausebof the constant rain lately, I trimmed the seal on the doors a few minutes ago. Took a very sharp knife and sliced the tall edge down a bit. See picture. Doors are flush and it's tight, took a small snug push of the doors. Don't worry they will be replaced, not the cleanest cut and I hate road whistle noise. Plus it's ugly, I was just testing how it being thinner would work out.

Re: Door seals

I looked through my receipts but could not find my steel rubber receipt. The first weather strip that i installed and wasted 5 days trying to adjust doors was soft seal(someone on her recommended it. Way to thick! Doors would not close properly.

When I got the steel rubber thin stuff it was very different laying next to the soft seal.

Call Steel rubber and talk to them. Tell them that you want the thinner of their two options.

Don't waste your time with any of this other stuff learn from all of my wasted time.

( I have no affiliation with Steel Rubber Products)

Re: Door seals

Like most on here I used the Precision brand and they were too thick.

I was able to get a thinner seal from Metro Molded Parts, it's very similar to the Steele thinner seal. I got samples from Steele and Metro before re-doing mine, I don't remember why I chose the Metro over the Steele but my doors shut just fine now.

Here's a link to the stuff I used: http://www.metrommp.com/index.cfm?f=...ET&Model=TRUCK

It looks like Steele now has theirs with 3M tape:

Standard: https://www.steelerubber.com/door-ed...ape-70-0145-wt

Have you tried checking with Jegs or Summit racing for SOFF SEAL? they sell them and not a lick of trouble adjusting the doors or closing them.

Re: Door seals

This is the kit that I bought from Steele for my '53 a few years ago. Which part do I need to replace? Will the remaining seals work OK?

Re: Door seals

Click on the door edge seal part number when you look at the kit. Inbthe description it says it is similar to another part number but bigger. You can click on the part number provided and it sends you to the slighly smaller stuff.
