1970 6 lug rear

Sometime ago I picked up a nice clean 1970 SWB frame with 6 lug front and rear, yesterday while walking by it I realized that it seemed to have a longer lenth rear like the 5 lug 71-72 rears have , I took a tape from drum to drum on a 69 6 lug rear I have in my garage and came up with 56 inches and then took the tape to the 70 rear with the 6 lug and I came up with 57 1/2 inches. I assume GM started to widen the rear to 57 1/2 at some point in 1970 but in a 6 lug version . am I correct or was this rear converted back to 6 lug ,it does have a 1970 axle code stamp on the axle tube.

GM started widening the housing in 70. You are correct.

Re: 1970 6 lug rear

Yes, 70 model trucks would be 6 lug of course but they could have either housing. There were never any 67-70 early housings built with 5 lug (narrow width) but there were both 5 and 6 lug versions of the wider one.

I think the people on the line just used what they had in 70. Once the earlier width housings were all gone they started using the longer ones. Just my .02

I like the narrow because you can dial in the wheel placement with bolt on spacers.
