Re: 72 Sierra Grande

Is it assembled or a bunch of machined parts?

Re: 72 Sierra Grande

The biggest thing is to keep dust, dirt, metal shavings, etc. out of the engine while it's sitting. Keep any holes leading into the cylinders or crankcase covered with painters tape at a minimum. You could also drape a towel over the whole thing after taping the holes.

Keep any grinding, drilling, or welding away from the engine so you don't throw metal shavings on it

Re: 72 Sierra Grande

Wouldn't be a bad idea to ask your engine builder what he would recommend for storage, especially if there's a warranty on his work

Re: 72 Sierra Grande

I stored a rebuilt motor for over 25 years.
I had some family issues, a divorce.
I left the rockers loose so the cylinders were sealed.
I did pull the heads, for inspection, before I started the motor.
Motor was installed in the car. Only issue was some mice had crawled through the exhaust system and stored food in the exhaust port.
It had the factory ram horn manifolds on it and the primary exhaust pipe installed. Which was no where near the floor.
Since it was food, and dry, it didn't cause any issues with the valve. Started and ran fine.
Tape it up and keep it dry. It will be fine.
Cheers.

Re: 72 Sierra Grande

I like to put a large heavy mil contractor type trash bag over them and tie it off tight with a zip tie if it’s still on the engine stand, or in an engine crate. Engine bags work good too but the contractor bags are heavier plastic.
