por15 epoxy putty and Steering wheel

I have been reading about steering wheel repairs. looks like the biggest issue is with shrinking and cracking. Has anyone used the por15 epoxy putty and how did it hold up. My wheel is really badly cracked. Not sure if it is even worth trying to fixing. Is it that material that the wheel is continuing to shrink or is it the epoxy repair that is the issue? Would love to hear from people about their experiences. Has anyone tried using short strand fiber glass body filler?

Thumbs up Re: por15 epoxy putty and Steering wheel

I have been working on a simulated wood steering wheel. I used plumbers putty on this one. Suppose to not be as bad about shrinking. This will be my second wheel I have fixed.

I found the East wood kit they sell uses the PC-7 epoxy.
You can order just the epoxy from Home Depoe.

The first one was a factory 67 Chevelle wheel I have in my 71. The wood wheel is going in the Ramp truck when I get the tilt wheel column done.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: por15 epoxy putty and Steering wheel

The POR-15 epoxy putty is pretty good stuff, but I used PC-7 on mine - locally available and less expensive. The wheel was in pretty rough shape, so it took a lot of work to make it nice again. Be prepared to spend hours grinding, filling, filing and sanding. If you take your time and sweat the details you can resurrect your wheel. IMO, a better option than the flimsy repop versions.

This is how it looks after an application of PC-7. Don't even try to get the stuff to go on smooth, it's not going to happen.

After about 20 hours of work, I have a new steering wheel.

Good luck with whatever method you choose!

Re: por15 epoxy putty and Steering wheel

For those wondering if it's worth it, keep in mind that the reproductions LOOK great but they're really flimsy, like a noodle. I was shocked.

I still have my OEM blue wheel and might restore it (I'm also waiting out an NOS one, guy wants a crazy price) simply because of that.
