Custom Bumpers

I am going to build or modify the bumper on my 87 for more offrad use. I am wanting to see some pics of what you guys have. I am going to be adding a winch in the near future and I am also making the rear. I am including d -rings and light holes. I haven't decided yet if I am just going to put a 2 in receiver style mount so I can move from front to rear, but it is a little weaker than the solid mount but more maneuverable.

Re: Custom Bumpers

Our monthly show us your bumpers post

This bumper was made by KMA in 1999 was like the second one they ever made for a first gen K5. I did have to modify it to fit better and added some gussets to the winch mount plate to prevent flexing
I have a 3" body lift so in the last pic you can see how the mounting brackets hold the bumper up higher than the frame. I re-enforced the frame too!

Kinda dark but you can see the crossmember with \ & / to the ends of the frame.
Anyway....

What's the intended use?

The receiver style will be horrible for any 'real' off road use, a set up like that will kill your approach/departure angle in a big way.

Here's a link to the many threads we've had regaurding bumbers, found em all by using our search function.

Re: Custom Bumpers

no pics, but just an idea.
Some of the guys around here run tube bumpers, welded up and fit with a compressed air fitting. Mostly 4" and 5" tubing, used for air storage.
This allows them to lower their tire pressure when running through sand or mud, and then they can use the air to put some pressure back in the tires before they hit the pavement again.
Nothing spectacular, I just thought it was a cool idea.

Are they really that bad? cuz I'm thinking about buying from them, do I need to request for a better finish or restart my search for the perfect bumpers again?
Please respond a.s.a.p.

I really doubt you would obtain a perfect bumper from them.

Mine had horrible fit and finish, was missing d-rings and a receiver tube that was supposed to be welded on... They lacked all support for the product itself, offered a 70% refund, if I paid to ship it back. I've heard others with holes not drilled for mounting or totally wrong. I've heard wrong measurements and crappy customer service.

It's your money, the old adage of you get what you pay for is accurate here. If you can do that sort of work on your own, build your own, not buy from them. If not, I would look elsewhere.

Re: Custom Bumpers

I was in Atlanta on business a few years ago and stopped to see Kennesaw’s operation. Their bumpers looked nice in person and they seemed to be really nice guys but a buddy ended up giving me his homemade bumper from a Suburban he was selling and reworked it then bolted it on the back of my ’78. It turned out alright but I think I’d rather buy a nice bumper for the front rather than build one from scratch.

Hard to believe this is the same bumper that was on the Suburban in the picture above.

Re: Custom Bumpers

Hey DirtyLarry - so is the winch behind your back bumper? From the pic I was thinking you would slide it in the receiver but then I noticed the fairlead is mounted to the bumper.

Re: Custom Bumpers

Yeah, the rear bumper is also set up for a winch, which I don’t have installed yet but should soon. Planning on a Smittybilt 10,500 lb or a Mile Marker 12,000 lb mainly because those two winches are relatively small and will fit in the tight spot well. There is an old school Hickey Sidewinder under the front bumper as well.

This picture kinda shows how the receiver is secured under the frame. Yes, it does smack, snag and hit just about everything on the trail.

Dunno, they were fine, either-way using the search function will give you every thread that has your search word parameters in it, there was something like 6 pages for bumpers when I last looked.
